My 2005 997 with 24000 miles that i bought new won't start. New battery last year and it checked out fine. The readout at the battery shows no charging. This follows a $1000 fix for faulty front sensor last month. This is my 4th Porsche and I have loved the brand. When it runs it's the best car on the road. I think it's shameful that a premium brand like Porsche has such common problems. My BMW and Toyota have never had a problem. I'm disappointed enough to take a break from Porsche until they address quality or extend their warranty to cover milage rather than years.

Ha? How did you conclude this is a COMMON problem? Mine was caused by my radar alarm going off for a couple of days that drained the battery, and Porsche road side assistance jumped the car and I haven't had ANY issues since then (8 months ago!).
Could it be that you don't drive your Porsche as frequently as your BMW, Toyota? When you don't drive frequently it's just expected that battery doesn't last as long, it's a matter of physics!
Mine goes in tomorrow and I'll post the results. There are numerous references for alternators and wiring defects with the 997. If my alternator is faulty after 24k it's a poor design.
The results are in. My 24000 mile 997 has a faulty alternator and ground wire. The dealer wants $2400 for the fix. This won't include fixing the horn which now only sounds the road runner beep beep beep. This is on top of a $1000 fix for a faulty front sensor.
I'm shopping for a new mechanic next week. No car should suffer these problems with the level of care it receives. After that I'm shopping for a new car.

Sorry you had back luck with your car. Definitely shop around for a cheaper alternative to fix this issue.
I've only had my battery drain once when using the Bose system while the Porsche was parked in my garage. When that engine is shut off the electronics are limited to about 25 minutes on their own (in mine anyway)
I had it happen to me yesterday I left the radio on with the key in for 4 hours, and it drained a less than year old Interstate.
