Mine has it occasionally but it reminds me more of cosmoline than rubber, but I can see how it could be taken as rubber.

25K is still likely to be cosmoline

Thank you everyone! Unfortunately, this issue has taken a back seat to the "System Fault" code now occupying my tach and ringing my bell. Crap!

My 05 997 has that rubber smell too - like you I suspected some fault at first but it seems its common on the 997. I would assume those fat rear tyres generate extreme heat on any kind of long drive as I don't seem to notice the smell much after short drives.

Wow..I am quite surprised with that statement. For the OP, I wish you good luck for a good ending to this thread.

My 03 996 had a strong smell of rubber or something after a blast down the highway, but my new to me 06 isn't as strong. The 03 had Pilot Sport Ribs and the 06 is running P-Zeros. I may be among the few that like the smell.

MC - thanks for posting your concern as I too have been noticing a faint burning rubber smell from my new 911CS Cab since bringing it home a week ago. I have also noticed the clutch does NOT like being "feathered" as it seems to easily heat up and you get the buring asbestos smell. In my case it's just been me learing how the 911 prefers to be driven and I have adjusted accordingly...big differnece from the 2008 M3 6 spd manual I traded in on it.

I LOVE that "Flaaaap" noise the exhaust makes when you take off just right

mine has had the smell since day 1 and i am certain it is never going away...somehow i think it has to do with the tires...when i got new fatter tires the smell got stronger

Use little gas when changing gears to avoid burning the clutch. Just take it easy on the gas until you have the clutch pedal fully unengaged. Then floor it!

The tires are most likely the culprit. Also, they take on a different smell as you work your way through the tread.

With over 50 K miles I still get this smell after any high speed (relatively speaking) run on the highway. I always assumed it was the tires. It does not occur when simply driving at low speeds around town.

I get this smell and thought it was burnt clutch and or rubber etc...I've had no issues though in my experience its not the tyres as the smell comes from the engine area and vents out through the wheel arches leading people to think its the tyres.

I've always heard that the smell was due to the brakes, but I guess it could be the tires.

I think we all have it and it's part of the joy that this manly car gives off manly aromas.

Mostly in the winter on a cold day (~ 30°-35°F) the PS 2's will shed small particles of the tire & it will stick to the mufflers. Then the burning rubber smell.
