Will the 997's depreciate as badly as the 996?

Awesome question. And with all sincerity it's almost impossible to answer. I had a 997.1 6 speed prior to my .2 PDK. If you had ask me at that time I would have said the 993. When I went PDK that mind set changed.
The PDK vs 6 speed manual has been debated to death and is emotional. Not even going there....but for me when I test drove a PDK in Sport Plus it was all over for the 997.1.
I am extremely fortunate to be able to flip flop back and forth because they couldn't be more different. On a spring or fall PCA run it's the 993 no question. On a July afternoon on my 45 min drive to the airport it's the 997 with cold air conditioning blowing all the way.
If my world closed in on me and I had to dump one it would probably be the 997 simply because I don't want to be the guy who "had" a 993 when they hit $100K in 10 years.

Very interesting. Also interesting how 911 sales are so much down. They sold far more 996s (in a year) than the 997.2. Obviously the economy has a lot to do with that . Hey they are getting more exclusive at least!

The number of 997's is 205% of the number of 993's in the USA.
My money is on the 993 for the long term

Think what you wish, but there was substantial reengineering that went into the 997. It's about 40% stiffer than a 996, and has an entirely new, revised suspension system. (The older 996 suspensions were incapable of handling the 19 inch wheels, for example.) There is nothing wrong with the M97 engine. Go back a few years to the days of the chain tensioner or the exploding CIS airboxes and tell me about terrible engines. All engines have a minor issue in them somewhere, and subsequent engineering usually fixes those issues. In time, we will discover a new liability in the 991 engines.

one (993 v.s 997.2) is not a good replacement for other. The 997.2 is a car you can drive the wheels off, as much as you like, rain or dry, no fear of routine costly engine work. The 993 is a nice car for the garage to take out for ice cream cones. The average owner won't risk totaling it in weather that isn't perfect and DE/autox becomes a non-starter to most purchasers who obssess over the lost value claimed by the odometer. The result is a Porsche owner becoming more like a Ferrari owner.... aka Ferris Beuller's best friend's dad.

This is a cross post from the 996tt forum:
I am considering buying a 911 as weekend toy car, I set my budget at around 45k. Question for the members, considering I drive it ~4,000 miles per year for 5 years, what will take a bigger hit in depreciation, a 996tt or a 997.1, all other things being equal (condition, miles, etc.)
I know you are supposed to drive it and enjoy it but life changes and I would like to know what to expect.
TIA
