drbooba1 - I just learned that my 2005 C2 does NOT have a self-adjusting clutch:

So I think I'm back to a working hypothesis that the springs in the pressure plate failed due to fatigue as opposed to the self-adjusting clutch mechanism (which my C2 doesn't have).
