It's sort of like saying congrats. when someone has a baby. Something new and positive in your life. In this respect a new Porsche is akin to a promotion or winning the lottery. Just a guess . . .

I have congratulated others for having obtained their cars.
I have been waiting 40 years to get my 911. I have worked for many years and saved enough cash to send my kids to college and prepare for retirement. Recently, I had the chance to obtain "the car of my dreams". My wife has known that I wanted a 911 since I was 16 years old. I am not trying to presesnt a sad story or anything like that. It is simply reaching one of life's goals. I know it's quite a luxury in the big picture and sometmes hard to believe I have a 911. It is a combination of luck and hard work... a prize given to myself.

Good point.
But usually congratulations are extended when something fortuitous comes our way, like when a woman finally conceives. But when you have full control over an event, why would that be something that should be congratulated, is my point.
And yes, I realize that is what is usually said. But my question is more along the lines of what is the more appropriate thing to say.

Well I suppose if one considers the inevitable depreciation, the potential angst of a random door ding or worse, and future coveting of a new car perhaps condolences are in order?

I mean, I've said it countless times myself before, but lately I guess I've been more contemplative and have wondered if that's really the right thing to say.
So lately I've been saying stuff like, "Good for you!" or "Alright man, beautiful car!" or "Excellent choice!"
I know, I get weird sometimes when I think too much. lol

Personally, I don't buy new anymore. I'm to the point where I buy something to pretty much drive it or work it. Overdone wax jobs and concourse trophies don't do it for me.
CPO's bought after the first big depreciation dip have worked well for me. Then I don't feel so bad phlogging them!

As far as "congratulations", I think its very appropriate if the car is meant to be more than an appliance. Owning a nice car is an achievement. I don't think I've ever congratulated someone for buying a Yugo.
