Parked Next To A Corvette Z-6 Yesterday--Certainly Different Types of Owners

Yesterday, I had to run to the mall to pick up a few bottles of wine for
Thanksgiving gifts and while I was looking for the perfect safe parking
spot amongst the sea of minivans and Camrys, I saw a suitable
spot, right next to a red Z-6 (albeit, 6 blocks away from the mall--my girlfriend
knows the routine--I drop her off at the doors and I meet her twenty
minutes later after I park).
I parked next to the Z-6 and took a look at the lines of it and compared
them to my 997.
I must say, the 997 is so much better looking and more refined
and polished looking than the Corvette. The Corvette looked
like a rattle trap and did not exude any elements of sophistication
and or heritage. The plastic GM sign on the lower side panels didn't
help its look either.
When I looked in the Corvette, on the passenger seat was a
UFC fighting magazine, a NASCAR jacket, and a 3 empty cans
of Bud Light.
Good or bad, the Corvette crowd is certainly different than the Porsche 911 crowd....

When I picked up my GT3 in Nashville a few months ago we stayed at the Opryland before hitting the road back to Houston. It was, quite coincidentally, the same weekend as the national Corvette caravan and I parked my Porsche in a sea of literally thousands of Corvettes making their way up to Bowling Green.
I admit that it did sort of feel like I was behind enemy lines, but fundamentally those Corvette folks were just car enthusiasts just like we are. There were some fantastic-looking cars in that parking lot and a lot of smiling faces in the hotel. Not much different than the PCA events I've attended.
I've been passed by plenty of Z06s on the track and there's a particular Corvette that eats my lunch at every autocross. Corvettes don't especially appeal to me but I can respect and appreciate them. There's a reason they're still building them after 57 years.
Edit to add: I sure wouldn't want to be judged solely on the basis of the weird stuff that ends up in the back of my car from time to time.

I can't stand them -they're cheesy and I see them all over the place. I don't look down on them because they're less expensive or American, it's just they do nothing for me. I do like the classic Corvettes however.

I owned two C5's, one Z06. I was probably not the typical Vette owner, definitely more of a Porsche guy, had them during my Mercedes phase as extra fun cars, that they were. I would have to agree with you At Law, it's a different crowd.
My impressions were:
- built like crap, body panels don't even line up, feels cheap, not tight like a German car
- screams midlife crisis, my Wife was embarrassed to be seen in them
- ridiculous, unjustified dealer markup
- cheap, fun speed
- real Vette enthusiasts are bizarre, they don't drive them in the rain, at least the California ones
- the aftermarket accessories of all types are endless, most are a white trash dream
- Many dealers will not let you test them prior to purchase, like they are sacred, even the base coupe. I can test drive a Porsche Turbo no problem.
- I would NEVER own one again!

As all the experts say, you can tell a lot about a person by the
type of car they drive and the type of women they date.
Again, simply observations for the purpose of discussion.

This year our local PCA chapter held a joint picnic with the local Corvette club. Some of the owner fit the stereotype many do not. They are for the most part enthusiasts also, I have been cruises with them in my BMWs and they share a passion for their cars.

The Vette is a great sports car and one with a long tradition too. In this country there are many more people with Vettes than 911s and therefore the demographics broaden. Heck, I have seen (even on this forum) 911 owners with tacky cars and behavior too. Let's not promote 2 bad stereotypes.
