Rear spoiler creaking on lift
Hi Guys, I am new to the forum but have owned a mere two porsches, my first a 997 C2s Manual, with PSE, short shift and more,
My second, a beautiful 997 Gen2 C4S in GT silver metallic, PDK, Sport Chrono plus and fully loaded with extras. The car was 9 months old with 4200 miles on clock when i acquired her.
I noticed last night a terrible creaking / squeaking noise from the rear spoiler when being raised. It sounded either very dry or as if the mechanism was twisted and straining when being raised
Has anybody else had this issue on a gen 2 car
Thanks guys for reading and responding
Steve

This is fairly typical. I have used some grease/oil type products to try to solve that problem, with a 50-50 chance of success. Once fixed, it will come back as those solutions are washed out by the rain/car washes. This area was not revised during the 997.1 to 997.2 transition, thus the issues are the same.

I lubed at a lot of places. As you know with this sort of stuff, you don't want to use too much, or you will only add to the problem (collecting dust, grit). I don't believe these were designed to require a lube. I suggest using a two-man approach. Have someone activate the tail as you stay next to it, with the engine cover released and up. You can stick your ear into places to discover which place(s) are causing the rubbing, and thus the creaking. I have also taken apart much of the tail assembly and find it just not eager to accept a lubricant. Where the issue may be centered is on those two black (ABS) tubes (on a 997), in which the guides slide to the tail. (Marked in the photo). I focused much of my lube attention to those areas.

I had the same problem and ultimately found that squirting a bit of lube (WD40 or whatever) in the drain holes at the bottom of the back plastic tubes eliminated the creaking.

Thanks Guys
I have spoken to the OPC who I bought the car from and they are going to arrange for it to go to a local OPC for inspection. I did not experience this problem with my Gen 1 car even after 24000 miles so was a little suprised. I will keep you posted of the OPC's responce

I had this very same problem at ~9K miles (2008 997.1). I noticed that the spoiler was slightly out of alignment (didn't sit quite flush on the driver's side and had a slightly larger gap between the spoiler and the body when down). It was easiest just to take it to the dealer who re-aligned the spoiler and lubed it. No more squeak.

How can you guys hear this traveling at the speed the spoiler is activated? And if you hear it when its parked when your playing around with it...so what? Okay, what am I missing here? Between noisy tire, stereo, and the engine noise there is no way I can here that stuff.

Dry lube is a good idea but has its own set of drawbacks. I recall a huge discussion about this on bicycle forums. I think that the consensus was that it does not hold up as well when exposed to the elements. If you are applying it to an area that is generally protected it couldn't hurt to give it a try.

I had same problem...bad creak. Some WD-40 on both extension tubes will do the trick. Note: It didn't fix the problem at first....it took about a week or so for the wd-40 to work itself inside the tubes. Can't hear a peep now!
