I heard this noise once when I first got my car many years ago. I have never heard the noise again. The solution was very simple. I never again pressed the spoiler button while the engine was not running. Actually I don't think I've ever pressed that button with the engine running either.

Hah, just sprayed a few drops wd.40 in those little holes on wing arms, cycled up-down a couple of times, and now the dying whale sound is gone
Thx!

While WD-40 is a good quick fix for many things and probably provides a quick fix here as well, it is a very thin lubricant and mostly evaporates. I would not recommend it as a long-term solution.

pongobaz's recommendation of white lithium grease is probably best. It will hold up for a very long time and provide the best possible protection against wearing out the gear teeth. You don't want to risk having to replace the gear mechanism later.

There is a DIY listed in the index on this forum for disassembling/cleaning/greasing the mechanism and gears. I've done it. It's not difficult to do.
