I received an email from Smartops and they told me that Targas are hard wired and they could not produce a unit to operate the top and hatchback.

Confirming on 997.2. I don't see why it wouldn't though. Check out the install procedure:

http://www.wit-usa.com/sms/db/smartt...97_v5.1/en.php

Plug and play! No cutting/splicing wires, etc.

What does this do for coupes? Same functions minus top? Anything else?

the advantages in coupes are much diminished from those for the cabs, IMO. And, the coupe module is much more involved to install. It isn't plug and play. It requires breaking into a wiring loom next to fuse box and wiring the module in, then trying to tuck it into small available space next to fuse box. So it is harder to install, and the only major benefits are delayed trunk opening (to avoid accidental tripping), chirp for locking, single button push for passenger window up (factory requires holding it for first half of up motion), and perhaps 1 or 2 other minor inconsequential features, such as passenger mirror tilt in Reverse if you don't already have it (standard with power seats). It does nothing for sunroofs or Targa tops.

I would only be interested in the chirping, so I guess it's not worth it. Especially given your installation comments. Thanks.

RemotKey is not that big a deal to install, having installed 2 older models and 1 newer one in my 09 997S

I am in (09 Cab) if we can get to 30 unit/20% off level, and presuming all is unchanged on the 2009s!

I installed the used unit I bought on my 997.2 and it works great. Be sure to search for the installation thread on Rennlist, its got more robust instructions and pictures than the vendor's manual.
