Porsche website doesn't list it for the 997.1 cars any longer but if memory serves me well then the 997.1 coupe/cab difference wasn't that much in difference.

I also test drove a 997.2 manual and PDK. I've driven stick shifts my whole life, I've never owned a car with an auto trans.
I did get confused with the buttons, I'm sure you would get familar with it over time, but I kept upshifting when i meant to downshift and downshifted when I meant to upshift.
I didn't really like PDK. It is much better than SMG, DSG, etc., but I think it takes away too much driver involvement. Half the fun for me is executing the perfect hell toe downshift, not having the computer do it for you.
I can see why many would choose PDK. If you commute in traffic or so your spouse can also drive, or you want to be faster at the track.
I've never tracked my p-car but I've done many track events in various cars (before I had 2 kids). I'd rather get a good lap time by improving my own footwork, heal toe, etc. with a clutch pedal thatnbe faster because the computer can upshift faster, rev match etc.
This is just my personal opinion, try it for yourself. Personally, I don't understand why someone would pay $4k more ($5k with sport chrono) for a transmission that is not as good as a manual with a clutch.
If you are looking for the absolute fastest lap times, you would be even quicker (I believe) if you left PDK in auto mode, but then you really have no involvement at all.
My local dealer said only about 30% of their sales were PDK's, 70% were still 6 speed manuals.
I don't hate PDK, its better than I thought it would be. If that was the only transmission that was offered it would not stop me from buying the car. I just don't think its as good as a 6 speed, especially at a premium price.

I just got a 2009 997.2 C2S, PDK, sport chrono plus - 2 days ago. The shifts are almost instantaneous. This is my fourth Porsche. Its amazing. There seem to be many factual issues in the original post. No way PDK takes a second to shift. If its not in sport, it shifts into higher gears - like a regular automatic. I almost always drive with it in sport - unless im in bumper to bumper and on a con call
I also have a 996 40th anniversary and didnt go to the 997.1 because there wasnt a huge difference in performance. The 997.2 with the extra 30HP (385) - its defintiely noticeable to me. Both 997.1 and 997.2 are amazing cars.

I just drove an S coupe w/ PDK this weekend. Although it was nice, it didn't make me hate my 05 tip. I admittedly did not have it in Sport mode. Something I will not overlook when I go back to drive the 2010 TT.

Some days this forum reads like the Twilight Zone.
PDK upshifts are slower? yeah, right.

i had 6sp 997, got pdk 997.. will never go back, i do wish some of the functionality was different (could set default to manual, or default to auto), and wish no shifter.. but instead paddles and buttons for P/R/D... but everything cant be perfect.

So who doesn't defend/validate/rationalize his own decisions, choices, and preferences?? That would seem to be the essence of most of these performance "debates" that inevitably devolve into manual vs. auto transmission preference.
