I recently purchased a '06 C4S coupe with 38k with full service records (serviced at Newport Beach Porsche in So Cal) for $51K. Decided to stretch my budget and go with an '06 due to the updated/strengthened intermediate shaft and to avoid first year glitches (plus C4s didn't come out in '05). Other than service at 10K intervals, the prior owner only had the changer replaced and one of the PSE mufflers. I have six months left on the factory warranty and brought the car into the dealer last month to fix the following:

1. Whistle on right side mirror, which they sealed up
2. Loose driver's vent due to broken clip
3. Replace door handle hinge spring

Just did the 40K service myself (oil, filter, cabin filter, air filter) and paid $125 for local shop do brake fluid flush. Total cost was about $315. Due for new rear tires in 3K miles ($350 each at Tirerack).

I've driven the car about 3k miles and everything runs great and seems bullet proof. Highly recommend going with an '06.

Great to hear all the positive buzz about the '06 reliability.

I recently got a '06 911 S myself and have been thinking about an extended warranty. The GEICO mechanical breakdown insurance looks like a great deal. But unfortunately GEICO's restrictions don't allow cars older than 15 months or second owners to add this to their policy.

In general I'm happy with the quality of my 06 C2 Cab. I've had a problem with the top, the driver's seat and that's about it. Both were covered under warranty though the dealer botched the top repair and I had to go back 3 times to get it right. The last time they brought the car to me at work after the repair was done right.

Guys, thanks for all the comments, very helpful. Seems like 06 is a good vintage
And thanks especially to Edgy for a very detailed post. I'm going to take my time over the next few months to find the right one. I plan to keep my next car well into its old age.

Thanks again!

yeah...great post edgy...i think its wise to buy a car with some miles...just for the resaons you state...

but many think once it hits 10K miles it almost trashed....

different strokes.

26K miles. '06 S

Water pump failure at 24k miles.
driver's door handle likes to "stay alittle loose" but cpo part is in for permanant fix.
Consumed more oil than I would have though it should, but is within Porsche's specs, and seems to be getting better.

Tracked 6-7 times.

No other problems (so far!!)

(the tires go pick up puncture wounds too easily for my taste, can't figure out why this should be happening with tires in this day and age of technology).

So far so good...never thought I could love driving an automobilie so much..

good luck

I have a 2005 CS cab and have had no issues whatsoever. This question of which model year of the 997.1 to avoid (or pursue) has been discussed in many threads over time. See for instance:

https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...005+model+year

https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...005+model+year

But, these discussions inevitably seem to conclude that the 2005 is every bit as reliable as a 2006+ 997.1. The IMS issue seems to affect so few cars, and mostly the Boxster and not the 997 from what I've heard. The only other problem I've heard mentioned is a rear bushing glitch causing some shiftiness in cornering hard with some of the early-2005 PASM-equipped vehicles. But, this is something easily and inexpensively fixed if your car happens to have this issue and it was not already repaired. Also, early 2005s could not play MP3s. Mine does--but my dealer said that they would not remove a stuck MP3 (and only a factory-made CD) under warranty--I assume this would apply to any model year though!
