Default 100cell - 200cell cat question + advice

I don't post here often as I am a 993 guy but a friend of mine asked if I could do it for him so here is the question.

He would like to have a more pronounced / porsche sound like my 993 has.
The 993 is a 3.8 with cat bypass and motorsound mufflers.

His car is a 2008 carrera S. So far he put a cargraphic cross pipe (X-pipe?) and a K&N airfilter.

Is replacing the cat's with 100 or 200 cell a good idea or maybe you guys have better advice?

Thanks in advance!

I had A.W.E. 200 cell (HJS) cats on my 06S and I thought it sounded great and that was with stock muffs! Probably sound even better with Cargraphic X-pipe and he'll get a few hp as well.

I have heard that using 100 can mess up the computer system causing check engine lights....
So, I would stick with the AWE 200.

AWE is a good way to go!

I'd say 100 cel should be part of a proven system that includes reprogram.....otherwise it's kinda a crap shoot....just my opin.

I currently run the AWE 200cpi metallic cats, if I had to do it all over again though I would run the 100 cpi cats. You can go over to FVD and they have a 02 sensor extension that will make the computer less sensitive to the 100cpi cats. The 100cpi cats doesn:t mess up the computer, what it does is the signal will be to hot and kick off a CEL. Even this may not happen, but if it did there is fixes available.

Softronics software also makes the tolerances higher for the 02 sensors so you can run 100cpi cats or no cats if you so desire.

So 200 cell should be the best solution?

Any idea if the sound difference between the stock cats and the 200 cell cats is really noticable?

Thanks

The cats are 45-50% of the sound deadning. If he does the 200 cpi cats the car will sound much more aggressive, it still won:t sound like an air cooled car though. It will sound like a pancake 6 but not like the air cooled cars.

If he wants to build a custom cat setup using 100cpi cats it can be done quite a bit cheaper than a ready made cat setup ala AWE/Fabspeed, which both use the HJS cat. Either way he can:t go wrong with the AWE setup.

The plan is to cut the original cats open and replace the cats with 100 or 200 cell's.

if I understand correctly, with 100cell cats i need to updat the motormanagment?
Is the difference between 100 or 200 really that noticable?

Thanks

No, probably just a couple of hp. I think you are going about this the inexpensive way. Talk to FVD they have the 100cpi metallic cats that can be welded into the OEM cans. As far as updating the motormanagement it depends....you can run an 02 extension which I mentioned earlier that will probably suffice. If your friend wanted to run software anyway then you can go that route..
