CPO'ed 997...IMS failure... New engine coming
After 2 1/2 weeks in the shop just heard that my CPO'ed 997 has an IMS failure and the dealer is just waiting for final OK from PCNA to replace with new engine.
Car had 36K miles.
Guess thats a pretty good outcome. I assume I get a whole new warranty on the engine for 2 years? No?
TIA

Nope.
I had an IMS failure in my Boxster late last year, and Porsche replaced the engine under warranty. I asked about the coverage on the new motor and was told there was no special coverage on the new motor, the car's standard 4 year, 50K mile coverage would apply. There is no 2 year coverage on a motor replaced under warranty. It's a large item, but for all its affect on your warranty it's like having the radio replaced -- no extension of coverage.
That said, if my motor grenaded tomorrow I expect Porsche would step up and give me some relief even though the car's out of warranty.

I'm curious, what model YEAR was your 997?

Cviles: thanks for the info on the warranty. I will pres my dealer for a warranty since this is dragging out so long.
CC: I'm not going to pay one dime. I have already asked them to buy the car back and thats when things got moving.
Car is on 05...I believe one from the later part of the year since I bought it in april and still have orignal warranty to july and then cpo warranty.
boo: GM of dealership says they mostly get 996 and 986's with this problem and hardly ever a 997.
Funny thing is they say the oil is clean.

You should receive a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty from Porsche with the engine replacement. Standard procedure. Has nothing to do with who pays.

This new engine should have the strengthened parts.
CC: what was the outcome of your failed IMS....did PCNA do anything for you?

The two year unlimited mileage "warranty" applies to any Porsche part purchased from and installed by a dealer. Parts covered under existing Porsche warrantites (New/CPO) do not get the extension in coverage.
It is interesting to note that when non-OEM aftermarket warranties cover the cost of repairs/parts the owner gets the 2 year coverage.

Nope.
I have first hand experience. 2 year warranty, regardless.
Could depend on relationship with Svc Mgr.....

Charlie, we are saying (correctly) the same thing.
It is interesting to note that the 2 year warranty on a crate engine is only valid if installed by a dealer. When I had my engine replaced I considered having it installed by an independent mechanic. In the end I payed 'extra' at the dealer so I would get the 2 year warranty.
