Default 997.1 - 997.2 Transmission

Has the transmission changed at all from the 997 to the new version, 997.2?

Has clutch changed at all? Just curious...

Yes,

Is the manual transmission and clutch a carry over between versions. I am still inquiring about how to smooth out the shift points. A few people have mentioned as time goes on, the clutch breaks in and softens up. If it's the same unit as the old 997.1, and people can confirm that, I will look forward to it.

Right now, I am off to a bumpy start. 480 miles on her. It seems to happen when I shift at earlier rpm points. I have been told it's normal and a mechanical noise. I am hopign over time the boom sound becomes less noisy between shifts. otherwise the car is amazing. Hardly something to lose sleep over.

Boom sound? Never heard that. 911 trannies tend to be a bit notchy when cold shifting 1st to 2nd - that's all.

Hi JK -

There are some minor changes, the 997.1 trans for the C2 is a Getrag (er, I mean Aisin) G97/01 vs a G97/05 for the 997.2 cars. The differences on the surface are a taller 3rd gear for the later transmission (1.56 vs. 1.61), and all cars now get the clutch that self-adjusts for wear instead of just the S-model cars in the 997.1 range.

Not sure if that helps or not, but that's what I have found so far. My uneducated guess is that there are no really significant structural changes between the two.

Best,
-Mirror

I'm surprised to hear that you call the 997.1 tranny a Getrag unit,--mine's from Japan, by Aisin. Perhaps you're referring to the units in the Turbo and the GT3.

Carreras have Aisin ( Toyota subs., I believe) manual transmissions from Japan.

Are these transmissions known to be as smooth as BMW ones over time. I read on the board eventually the clutch and transmission break in and are a bit smoother. Can anyone confirm that has had a 997.2 for more than 3000 miles?

Maybe the torque on the 535 might be the culprit. I had a 530i and it was smooth...

I believe the 535/550 has a different trans than the 530/520. I drove a 520 in Germany and the trans was very smooth.
