The viscous coupling is the same in the 997.1 cars. By 997.2 they redesigned it significantly,--more toward the 964 and 959 electronically governed design.

Better question is why buy a C4 to disingage the front wheels....cheaper to buy a C2 that already comes with the front disingaged and don't have to click the parking break.

Because you can play with it easier and in a much pleasant way. Actually I think this would be the best option possible on the C4S, because you would have the larger rear end only available on Turbos and C4S, and then whenever you would want to play hard with it, switch off the front axle. In bad weather it could be turn on again. If the next Turbo comes with this features I´m sold. Never really liked the neutral way 4WD behave, even when push it to the limits.

I didn´t bought a C4S because it´s not as nice to play as a C2S, but I like the larger rear end.

I'm sorry but that is ridiculous.
Have you driven your C4S on the track? I assure you it is just as much fun as a C2S and just as much fun to "play with."

That larger back end is a myth.

Narrow Body
* 997 - width 71.18"
Wide Body
* 997 - width 72.91"

1.73 inches COMBINED left and right. Perhaps your WIFE can see the difference between 1.73 inches but on a CAR that's pretty good vision. Welcome to Porsche Advanced Marketing 201. (An upper division course).

I'm with Dan. Even with a "2" and a "4" car side-by-side I have a really tough time seeing the difference. From most angles I can't distinguish between them at all.

I can tell the width difference between a 4 and a 2 from 50 yds away easily, coming or going. You can easily tell in the photos posted here too, and not just from the back view but from the 3/4 front view, as the fender bulge forward of the wheel well is quite noticeable.
+1

I too can tell the diference quite easily. I think the big butt efects the whole car and is noticeable from most angles.

They probably designed the system to do this with the very first click of the parking brake. As long as the parking brake isn't engaged at this point (however minimal) I suppose this is just a way to open the c.diff and alter the handling characteristics of the car. If the parking brake is even slightly engaged at one click, I wouldn't think it's a great idea. Perhaps if this gets enough publicity, Porsche will either make a driver's controlled center differential available in the future (which I doubt they will), or just put an "on/off" in a menu somewhere for the c.diff (maybe a possibility as part of a future sport crono feature). Disclaimer - this is all pure speculation on my part.
Yeah Moderato, I think you're right. Probably pulling up on the hand brake releases the electromagnetic clutch and essentially turns the c.diff from an LSD to an open differential, allowing the rear axle to spin independently from the front.

Perhaps the only significant distraction with the 4 is the higher coefficient of drag and greater weight to move around. It would be fun to have a 4 at times but I can't afford the luggage space loss.

Dan,
I hate to upset you with this buddy, but your cabriolet is the heaviest and has the same drag coefficient as the others! You're moving more weight around!!!!!!

C2S 3131 pounds; drag 0.29
C2S Cabriolet 3318 pounds; drag 0.29
C4S 3263 pounds; drag 0.29

Stop with the negative vibes! Seriously, I'm only suggesting that if those things are important to you, that you may want to consider their impact. I wrote off the weight factor a long time ago. Also, since using the SHAM WOW towels for drying the cabriolet top my cd has gone way down...

I don't think I'm being negative at all Dan.
I'm just trying to avoid misconceptions.
