New C4S with PDK or used 997TT with Tiptronic
Hi there,
Finally, in about 2-3 weeks time, I will have the needed money to purchase my dream car, which off course, is a modern Porsche !
The local dealer has a new C4S with PDK -- Atlas grey exterior with natural brown interior
Another dealer has a used 997T (year 2007) with Tiptronic -- Macadamia exterior with natural brown interior (2800 miles, 1 owner)
Prices are almost the same, but I am scared with the Tiptronic transmission in the 997TT, as once I test drove a 997 C2S with this transmission and felt it was terrible: up or down shifts very slow ! Not too inspiring...
I know the 997TT is in another league compared to the C2S, but is the Tiptronic intuitive enough and are the shifts quick enough ?
I know the C4S with PDK is a new car and the transmission is incredibly fast, intuitive, etc..
I have not test driven any of theses 2 cars yet, but what are your thoughts ? What would you do ?
I plan to keep the car for a very long time, not a daily driver, but the weekend toy !

I would say test drive them both and see which one feels the best to you. I think a car is a lot like a shoe - you have to try it on and walk a little in it before you can really know if it's a good fit or not.
Personally, I wouldn't wish a tip tranny on my worst enemies, but opinions will vary depending on first hand experiences and purposes.

Go for the tt. The C4S is simply no competition. The tip is very responsive. You just have to drive it agressively. As the tutbo tip is faster than the 6 speed I don't see how you could be dissapointed with its "shifting."
The other issue is waiting until Porsche works out the bugs of the DFI engine and, possibly, the PDK. No doubt PDK is the future and hard core manual guys are destined for extinction (as the tip will be) but, for now, let someone else be the beta tester.

I would lean towards the C4S although the Turbo is a great color combo also. PDK vs Tip no match, the PDK is fantastic the tip just a good automatic transmission. The PDK shifts worlds faster, has 7 vs 5 forward speeds and is lighter than the tip. Down the road maint. on the C4S engine will be cheaper than the turbo. While a turbo has fantastic power only on the track can you even hope to explore it. I had a 997 GT3 that was bought back for repeated (count 4) RMS issues in 10 months, thought about a turbo and instead ordered a '09 C2S with PDK and could not be happier. That said, whatever you decide on many miles of enjoyment.

I have owned both the Tip and now the PDK....on the track I can out run 996TT and keep up with 997TT. A C2S PDK on a curvy track can out run a 997TT Tiptronic.
For the road as a dailey driver and if you are not all about car feel and performance either car will be fine for you. If you like to drag race the 997TT with Sport Chrono and Tip has that extra boost capability and will out run a lot of cars on the street and highway.

With such a decision, it must suck being you!
BTW, I'd personally go for the 09 C4S, as it has plenty of power, a great tranny, and a much improved PCM. Actually, a 09 C2S would be even better I think. Try them all so you'll be sure you know what you like and what is important to you.
Good luck with your decision.

I, of course, am partial to the PDK Atlas grey! obviously, you need to drive both, then decide. My initial thought was to get an 08 tt cab, then a C4S cab and ultimately went with the C2s cab. i don't need the awd and I loved how nimble it was when i test drove one! The tt is the ultimate Porsche to own for most enthusiasts. congrats on saving the money to buy it! I have to finance mine, but it will be paid for in 3 years. Good luck with you search and let us know what you bought with pics, of course!

To me, hands down i'd get the C4S. you've waited a long time to finally get your P car, why not make it a new one? who knows what the prior owner did with the turbo (is it CPO?)The PDK is in another league compared to Tip. plus, Atlas/natural brown is an awesome combo, and i'm sure the performance is comparable. I prefer the styling of the non-turbo 911's, and i'm not a huge fan of macadamia.
