I know PPI's have been discussed many times before, however,
a partner of mine is looking to buy a 2007 997 (non S) with 10k miles.
I advised him to get a PPI, however, he says it's under warranty
for two more years, what could go wrong....
I would appreciate your thoughts.

At 10k miles, depending on how it was driven, it could be facing replacement of any number of wear items not covered by warranty...nothing is cheap with these cars...and/or it could have been wrecked...worth the few hundred bucks to have it checked out.

It's important to get a DME and since it should be part of a PPI, why not get it for the peace of mind. Also, the PPI should include a paint check and than you can find if there's been a respray. I got my PPI for $255. Best $255 I've spend (considering the $70k+ purchase price).
Here's the DME scan that came back on my 2008 C4S Cab with under 7,000 miles:
DME:
Range 1: 168
Range 2: 45
Range 3: 3
Range 4: 0
Range 5: 0
Range 6: 0

Lots of things such as abuse could void the warranty (an indication of which would come from a DME readout); some wear items not covered, e.g. clutch. Too much money to spend without a good PPI checkup.

One missed shift could give you range 6 over-revs. Fast forward a year when your partner is having engine trouble or it's blown altogether. He brings it to the dealer and expects it to be fixed under warranty. They plug in and say "Hmm, sorry, warranty voided due to abuse - You have range 6 over-revs meaning you've been blowing shifts. New engine will be $25,000."
I've purchased 3x used Porsches in the past and 2 new ones. The 1992 was well out of warranty and PPI was mandatory. The 1995 Boxster S was CPO, yet I looked at about 6 seriously and 4 of those had significant over-rev issues with a few having logged much time in Range 6. I was patient and ended up with a great 22k version that fully checked out and is covered under CPO warranty for many years to come. The 07 GT3 - checked out wonderfully with no over-revs. CPO again was a must.
If I were looking for a used Porsche that is "modern" and has warranty, I'd make sure it had PPI and went through Porsche's CPO process for not only the extended warranty but also the full inspection they do.

The PPI is definitely worth it. If they don't turn anything up then you bought peace of mind for your money. However if the PPI does turn something up it could save you an expensive lesson. Even if the PPI only turns up some relatively minor issues, you could probably get the seller to at least knock off the price of the PPI from their asking price. If the PPI turns up an issues in the 1K - 3K range then there will have to either be renegotiations or perhaps consider purchasing another car. Bottom line is do it.

Whats a DME. If it indicates over revs...is it worthwhile to have it done on an 08 leftover?...despite a few miles, could it be possible for a test driver to screw things up?
