You had originally said 'stop sign,' which is why the $600 sounded really high.
Rolling through a red light? That's a whole 'nother story.
$300 for tint? Still seems mega-big to me. Unless your tint is super dark.
My neighbor is a CHP Officer. He says if he can't see through the driver's window tint, it makes him very nervous, and the ticket is much more expensive.
CA law, as you know, says no tint on front three windows, period, but lots of people put a slight tint on them and a heavier shade on the rear windows.

solution is to just roll ur windows down if u get pulled over. they prob won't notice, and i don't think theyll care as long as they can see you. i was pulled over 4-5 times in 5 yrs in socal with 20% tint but never caught **** for it cuz i rolled down the windows.

When I got a $35 parking violation in Seattle, they also tacked on a $38 Improper license display for "no front plate visible". It was written up as 2 separate tickets! Paid fines (online). No "fix it" required.

I don't get it...why/how would the degree of tint make a diff. on the price of the ticket? It is illegal to have any tint on the windows.

SadiQ,
Yes, somewhere between him yanking me out of the car and throwing me in cuffs on the side of the freeway, I forgot to roll down the passenger window.
