In the era of lasers, are radar detectors obsolete?

8 years, probably 160k miles and no ticket makes that statement completely inaccurate.
Situational awareness, common sense and a V-1 or other good R.D. keep away the tax man[/QUOTE]
Bob, I agree 100% about situational awareness and common sense. These devices are just tools and should be used that way.
I run a V1 and Lidatek laser jammer and both have saved me. there was one time last summer (up near your neck of the woods I think) where I was coming home from cooperstown (the cop should have seen me a few hours earlier LOL) and did get hit with laser even though my jammer went off.
Still not sure how that happened. Middle lane, other cars around doing around 80 or so and my jammer went off (I actually saw the cop in the median). I hit the brakes to slow and he still pulled me over. wrote me up but found some lawyer up there who beat the rap for me. Would love to know how he got me if my I jammed him??

dudes... seriously.... situational awareness >>>>>>>> dumbass radar detectors
besides, if you get pulled over and you have a radar detector, what do you think your chances are of getting a warning? yea...

To my knowledge, all the lasers in use currently, must be used from a stationary position. That means they will still use Radar while they are moving.
The laser must bounce off something shiny in order to return to the receiver. That means they will target something like your license plate or headlights. Consequently the Jammer must be mounted in close proximity to these areas.
One of the reasons a detector isn't very good for laser is that it will only pick up scatter. If you mounted the detector on your bumper, then it would be a bit more accurate.
All in all, the detector probably serves as a good reminder to watch your 6 and 12.
IMO Jammers are not cost effective at this point and time.
Just my 2 cents...

I travel frequently for business and have four cars at home so equipping each of them isn't sensible.
My last two tickets have been laser. Nowadays I don't even bother with the radar/laser detector. As mentioned previously - the faster I get on track or at auto-x the more conservatively I drive on the street.
Having said that - if there was a portable laser jammer it would be nice to have as insurance.

Escort Laser Shifter ZR4 in combination with Passport 8500 X50 has never ever let me down. With this combination I worry more about instant-on radar than I do about laser.

What worked extremely well for me in the past is a good discrete UHF frequency with which I would call up my buddies in their EF-111 and if I was planning a speed run in a particular area, I would have them do a few low altitude passes overhead with their broadband jammer going. Worked everytime! No tickets!
