For me personally I wouldn't choose an older 911. I'm a real sucker for the beauty of the current 997. I would much prefer to take a giant leap up from a fairly bog standard daily drive to the flawlessness of a brand-spanking 911 fresh from the factory. As much as I appreciate the older generation models I simply prefer the more recent additions and I imagine that will continue as the 998/99_ etc are built of the next couple of decades.

Is still a little concerning in regards to that mechanical feel of a car possibly being lost. Does anyone else feel the same way? Sports cars sounding like Prius'?
You may be too young to remember "New Coke". Suffice it to say, the market didn't much cotton up to it.

Technology has made these cars better in the last 10 years than in all of the previous history of 911's put together. (in other words, It's accelerating at an ever faster pace).

What I'd give to be in your shoes! I can't even begin to imagine what a 2040 model year 911 will be capable of! And you have the benefit of finding out!

One of the facinating things about the 911 model is how Porsche has always found a way to improve on what, at the time, seems an almost impossible thing to improve...(that being the 911!). There's no reason to believe this will change anytime soon!!

In other words..."no worries, be happy!" and try and not borrow *to* much trouble!

Good luck and enjoy!

I have no doubt that PAG will produce great cars into the future. However... they will be different. A 911, up to now (and some may argue up to the 993 model) is a special car; engine in the rear and short wheelbase. That may change soon, as the 991 mules show a much longer wheelbase which will significantly change its current go-kart driving dynamics. If that happens, well... there's still Lotus.

To the OP: the fact that you state that you only like current 911s and not a more classic 80s model... tells me that you have already embraced change and really do not care much about the basic essence of a 911 - thus, the future will make you happy.

You're 18 now, so why not just plan to buy a CPO 05 - 07 997 in say about 5 years time? As long as you don't get married you'll be able to afford it easily.

Fear not, young grasshopper! Hybrids are a thing of the moment. Eventually some better technology will replace them. Eventually nobody will build any more sedans/wagons that use gas or diesel... but sports cars will remain! The 911 (and cars like it) will still be rolling off the assembly line (in smaller #s) way after the last prius/camry/taurus/accord/jetta/whatever has been crushed for scrap-metal.

During the 70's oil crisis, Dr Porsche was interviewed by a magazine that asked him what his company would do "now that high gas prices made his sports cars obsolete." His answer was, "the last car ever made will be a sports car." Listen to him.

And think of how much less traffic you'll be dealing with on the backroads when everyone else traveling by some other means. You'll have plenty of room to open'er up!

looking to the future, I gotta think the 2019 911 is going to rock, whatever it is.

I am only 18 years of age. You can judge me if you want to, but that's beside the point. I am in love with the Porsche 911. To me it is the ultimate. A car which is instantly recognisable. An icon. A masterwurk. The majority of you are privileged enough to have driven my dream car.

My major concern is - the future of the 911. Or more specifically - the future of the sports car itself. Obviously the price of petrol is a major market concern. It will take me at the very least a decade or two to afford the 911. What state will the world be in in regards to petrol prices and hybrid car technology? It's a real fear of mine. That when I finally get to the stage of being able to purchase a Porsche - it will sound and drive like a Prius - no sound of the engine, exhaust, changing gears etc. The driving experience will have diminished.. And even though petroleum will still be around in some shape or form I fear that the inevitable hyper-inflation to come will make running a 911 on a day-to-day basis a thing of the past.

Is there any hope for us youngsters who fantasise about the 911? Or am I just being paranoid? What shape will the sports car take in regards to new technology?

Thanks for your time.

Seb
Actually, I suggest that you worry about the huge debt that your government is racking up and that you will have to pay for, and the massive social infrastructure that you will be part of, the 2/3 of your paycheck that will pay the medical expenses of your baby boomers and the university degrees of your neighbours children. Your life will be totally regulated in 15 years, the bottom will fall out of the jobs market, no credit, food stamps, etc, etc.

So, you are right. No hope at all.

Even if I was remotely interested in starting an online business, I am already studying a Commerce degree at University. Thanks for the advise though!

Ha thanks for the promising and kind words! It's really more of a concern to me how the car will develop in the future - Porsche will no doubt be affected.

It's funny you mention this because I actually do care about the essence of a 911. I'm a classics man myself (classic over plastic etc etc) - but the modern 911 is one of the few exceptions for me! Its beauty is just unrivalled and the 40+ years of development is just too tempting. And where did I mention I dislike the classic 911's? I said I appreciate them but prefer the 993, 996, 997..

We all love a bit of pessimism!
Although I'm not sure you know which country I live in haha.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. So the general consensus is that combustion engines will be around for longer than need worry about?

Keep the responses coming.

Cheers

I suspected you might not be from here, the U.S., because your written English is far better than that of a typical 18 yr old here, even for one in college. And this quote from you confirms it for me, without your having suggested you're not from here:
Even if I was remotely interested in starting an online business, I am already studying a Commerce degree at University.
We Americans say "working on a business degree" or "studying business at college." And though I can't pick up your accent from here I'd say you're either from across the pond or from down undah. But I'm gonna guess you're from across the border to the north.

Good luck to you!

My guess is the UK. In an earlier post he referenced the term "bog standard," which became a colloquial part of the British vocabulary in the early '80s.

Haha how very analytical!

I actually live in Australia but was born in England and lived there for 7 years. You are both right in that respect.

Cheers fellas.

The 911 is in good shape as sports cars go, trying to evolve in an ever "greener" political climate sweeping the world.

You want something to "fear" - consider what is going to happen to the Corvette.
