Default Tire wear

After 13,700 rears are shot - see attached pic with cords showing (1st pic). Though it's wearing more on the inside, I assume this is within spec since it's worn down so much?

Next question: Should I replace the fronts at the same time? See 2nd pic. Bars clearly showing, but I'd guess at least 2K more miles left....

Thanks!

You should get roughly 2 to 1 wear... rears to fronts

Your wear is perfect! With the rear negative camber the inner tread will wear off first on the rears. The fronts will go another 15K. You are clearly new to the 911. As Gunner suggests, it is extremely normal to get a 2:1 replacement rears:fronts. What many people do is buy the same rears again, and then at the full 4 tire replacement time, either go with a brand change or stick to what you like (if you do like the first set). One compliment,--that you have to smarts to actually LOOK at the inside of your tires rather than to simply evaluate them without putting any effort to it. The inside wear gets by a lot of novice 911 owners.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I'm only newish to the 997. I had a 993 for 5 years and consistently ran 2 sets of rears for every set of fronts. So looks like the same holds true for the 997 - I just got a bit intimidated by seeing the cords on the rears & the wear bars on the fronts...

Guess I only need to spend $1K+ (for rears only) for now! :-)

I'm in the same boat with my car (13k on the tires). The rears are in need of replacement. I'm considering changing all 4 tires with Bridgestone REO 50's. The cost of the 4 Bridgestone's are just a bit more than the replacement of the rear Michelins. Good luck.

Data points:

My first set of rears lasted 9,100 miles.
My second set of rears lasted 7,689 miles.
My third set of rears lasted 6,661 miles.

My first set of fronts lasted 14,000 miles.
My second set of fronts lasted 9,451 miles.

The faster rear tire wear is understandable since "all the power and most of the steering" is back there. I didn't start tracking my car in earnest until 8k miles or so, and I believe that's the reason for the accelerated wear that I'm seeing. It's well worth the tire wear to experience the satisfaction and enjoyment of driving the car as it was built to be driven, though. Wouldn't change a thing. The Tire cost does make the track fees seem cheap, though. It wouldn't take too much more track time to justify a second set of wheels and some r comps.

Dude...if you are getting 14K miles out of your rears, you are simply not enjoying the car! I am with Nugget...proud to never have gotten more than 8K out of a rear set... :-)

I was surprised to get this much out of em as well.
I always averaged 10K or so on my 993.

That said, I think I've done a fair amount of enjoyment of the last 13.7K of miles which included:
- 4 lapping days
- 3 trips on Hwy 36, one of the best driving roads in the country.
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/Highway36.htm

- and of course since this is a "pleasure only car" most of the driving is fairly spirited, though I'm not exactly burning rubber....

Got the new PS2s N1s mounted (rears) out the door @ $1178....crazy really. Most cars get a set of 4 for 1 of these of course we're not driving 997s for their low operating costs...

What do the bars represent, 2/32?

I got 20 K miles out of the rears and 40 K miles out of the fronts. I drive the car hard but do not track it. I don't understand what people are doing to get less than 10 K out of a set of rear tires.

20K/40K, wow!! What brand tires do you run? How far do you wear the tires down before you replace? I get more than 9K out of the rears but not much more than 15K and never more than 25K out of the fronts.

Got 20K on my rear PS2's and thoroughly enjoyed the car, including 3-4 track days and countless spirited runs. It can be done without driving like a granny. $1,000 for two new rear PS2 replacements, mounted/balanced and filled with nitrogen.

This is on the original Contis. When I replaced them late last year the wear bars were not even flush with the tire but after driving on the fronts for nearly 4years (and nearly 40 K miles) I wanted to try out the PS2s which is what I have on them now.

Conti's -good deal. They came standard on my Boxster-handled well and lasted longer than my Michelins.

My rear Pirelli's are gone at 13k miles...I'm getting ready to order a set of 305's to replace the 295's.

LOL I have a hard time getting that number of miles on my Audi A4 tires. I've owned various 911 iterations over the past 30 years, and 10K on the rears was about average for me, but I have to admit that I do push my cars hard. Living and working in the country presents me with too many drifting temptations.
