I've used the search feature and come up with some reputable indy's in the LA area which include:
scientific automotive
arredondo
callas rennsport
independent porsche
to name a few... and some other indy mechanics that specialize mostly in air cooled 911s...
first, i was wondering if anybody had a referral to a socal specialist that is good with 997's...
second, i was hoping to find a place closer to orange county... any where in orange county is acceptable (south county, anaheim, newport beach, etc...)
can any one help?
thanks!!!

I used to bring my cars to Red Line in Santa Monica, but they are now in Long Beach. They primarily work on older stuff, but give them a try.

I've used them on my 997S and I've referred several other aircooled and "modern" Porsche owners as well.

Montclair: 911Design (great shop can do anything and they build a lot of porsche race cars!) (Ask for Loren)
Santa Ana: GMG (not the cheapest)
Venice: OTTO's (ask for John)
Costa Mesa: Stuggart (never used)
San Diego: Mirage International (great! ... ask for Jay)

This is a valid concern. I took my 997 to an indy that did a lot of aircooled. He seemed to really know his stuff about aircooled, but didn't have the tools / experience that I would be confident returning there. Not sure about Otto's, but I think that is an aircooled place.
Eurospec seems like a good place (Pico/Hauser) from a service I had done recently. I haven't had them do anything major, but they are former dealer mechanics who seemed to take pride in what they did.

Well whomever you choose, make sure they have the factory PIWIS tester and get/have all the Factory Technical Service Bulletins. The most critical item on a newer (987-997-on) car such as this is that they use ONLY factory (genuine) parts especially the engine oil filter and Mobil-1 0w-40 oil. These newer cars are of a different breed and most air cooled mechanics are lost when diagnosing a problem with them.

Anytime guys. here is what I have been working on:
Callas Rennsport Porsche
997-I Common Problems List
• Engine Intermediate shaft bearing issues (M96 engines)
• Ignition Coils cracking (Usually creating misfire fault codes)
• Flywheel seal area oil leaks (M96 engines)
• Intermediate shaft flange area oil leaks (M96 engines)
• “Front” Control unit (Module) faulty (Erroneous error messages)
• Starter to Alternator wiring harness crimp connections loose
• Front cowl (Cabriolet rear) area drains clogging up
• Gateway Control Unit (Module) failures (Battery drain issues)
• DME (ECU) damaged when re-programming fails (New DME needed)
• Horns pointed in undesirable position allowing water intrusion
• Airbag light on with multiple fault codes (Wiring harness and control unit issues)
• MRS occupancy sensor calibration issues due to foreign objects under RF seat
• MRS occupancy sensor control module communication issues (fault code is only in Airbag module)
• Ignition key heads losing their keyless entry/alarm control (keys are not bad but just need to be synchronized or reprogrammed)
• Tire pressure monitor INOP, won’t relearn. Issues with sensors and modules
• Oil pressure gauge INOP—Either sender or wiring is shorted due to corrosion at terminals, needs new jumper harness
• Fuel filling issues, fuel filler neck faulty
• Engine dies, loose ground strap at ground post on body near battery
• Technician not correctly programming all the M-options into DME, causing body electrical and PSM issues.
• Multiple cylinder misfire fault codes with no real issue—DME update needed
• Engine misfires caused by faulty starter harness, intermittent low battery voltage supply to DME.
• Engine misfires due to faulty valve lift and camshaft adjust solenoids
• Technician not replacing timing solenoid filter strainers when replacing solenoids
• Check engine illuminated due to fuel vapor leak @ ORVR (Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery) valve
• Reverse Gear cannot be engaged, shifter cables must be adjusted with factory tool
• Engine oil pan protection plate recommended
• Extended engine oil changes creating excessive engine oil sludge issues
• Shifter **** to boot connection
• Climate control ***** surface deterioration (Peeling or wearing off)
