Is that what the tech said, that the dead cells were not dry?

You should have asked to see the old battery for yourself to confirm this, as a learning experience for future reference. Typically cells die prematurely from electrolyte starvation. I've had my original battery for close to four years now, and with proper maintenance I hope to make it last another year or two.
