Default Anyone run Pilot Sport Cups on street?

Thinking of swapping PS2's to PSC's (mounted on different set of rims) to get to and run in DE events . Anyone with on-road experience with them? I do not really want to use a car or tire trailer.

No problem running them on the street. Just be more careful in the rain. I run back and forth 90 miles each way to track events on Toyo RA1's and then R888 R-Compund tires. They are DOT approved. Enjoy!

If you are talking about the 19 inch ones, they are one of two OEM tires for the 997 GT3 and RS. They are very high performance street tires. By the way, I prefer the Pirelli Corsa System tire which is the other OEM GT3 tire.

I have a set for my SC to autocross and or DE. I selected the "cup" tire so I could legally drive to and from the event without my trailer and thus change tires at home. I would echo the comment about more care in the wet. Also you know because of their soft tread and low wear rating they will wear quicker. When I had my GT3 I was told to expect about 5000 miles if they were used as daily driver tires.

Elevate pressure too & from track (or you will go through the tires before you get there )
As mentioned, wet means caution, heavy rain probably means stop for a cup of coffee.

A bit of exageration on the wear.

They are fine on street. Drove 4 hours in pouring rain to Summit Point WV on MPSCs. Most of time at 70. In really bad downpours, I had to slow to 55, because I could feel the car move a bit. But they really aren't that different than PS2s. In fact, they are pretty much the same compound as PS2s, with faster wear and higher cost, and virtually no gain in grip.

As others have said, beware of driving these tires in the rain -- they have almost non-existent siping and will hydroplane easily. Also, because the tread pattern is so low, you might be cited by your local police if they take a close look at your tires.

Second, these tires are like ice skates when they're cold. Don't for a second consider using them when it gets below freezing.

But for nice, clear and warm days in the summer? Go ahead and enjoy them. Just be aware these are not general-purpose tires and drive accordingly.

If you are just looking for some really good track tires to drive back and forth to the track on why not get the Toyo R888 or RA1's? The Toyo's are said to be a better track tire than the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. I have used the Toyo's as my track tires for years.

Excellent, thank you......I can then attribute the faster times to my ever-improving cat-like senses & abilities.

Practice makes perfect. Nice job.

For the record, I'm talking about the OEM N0 MPSC that came with 7GT3. Not the MPSC that came with 6GT3. That's a very different tire.

Mike,
From earlier posts I believe you are running on 18's on the track. The R888s come in oem 19" sizes, have you considered the 19" tires or have past experience with them?

No I never tried the 19" R88 OEM sizes. Never reallt considered them as my street tire because they are not as good of a street tire as my PS2's.

Guys, waaay back I tried to make the point that the 19 inch Sport Cups ARE a street tire. The 18 inch versions are a track tire and I fully agree they are a hazard in the rain.

If you want a more versatile R compound, my favorite is the Pirelli Corsa (not the System Corsa, the original R compound) which is now back in production. Not as good as the 18 inch Cup in the dry but can be driven in the rain. Like all true R compounds I agree with whomever posted that they are dangerous once the temperature drops to 40 F or less.

I did a very busy autocross season in 07 on mine, maybe 25 events with 87 miles each way. Got caught in some heavy rain once in a while too. They can be VERY hairy if you have set your suspension for the track. I almost changed lanes a few times when the very slightest rut was encountered. I corded mine on the inside because on the -2.5 camber. I don't care for them at autocross as they take too long to heat up.

I dive mine all the time.
These are the N rated versions, they are slightly harder and have an extra rain groove. They are NO problem in the rain whatsoever. This is UNLIKE the real, old school cups, non N rated, they are freakin' scary inthe rain and wear like crazy.
Make no mistake, they are two completely different tires.
