Porsche wants it this way, they've made a conscious decision to deal with this by drastically cutting production, and raising prices which sends the message "those remaining who want to/can buy this car will now pay more for it" approach. You've got a deep global recession, deflation, demand for luxury items tanking - what carrot are they dangling to get potential buyers off the fence? They are making a bet that this downturn is going to be short lived - they're wrong.

They are cutting production for the same reason that GM, Ford, Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, (yes, Ferrari too: http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/12/08...ees-by-friday/ )
They are cutting production because the don't want to further exacerbate the already excessive dealer stock problem. They are not cutting to try and go upmarket, or become more exclusive. They want to sell 100,000+ cars a year, and are faced with substantially fewer buyers, so they will make fewer cars.
