Dimming mirrors
Many of my cars have/had auto-dimming mirrors, but I have mixed feelings about them.
Auto-dimming is not std when ordering a Porsche. What are the minus of auto-dimming mirrors?
Reliability? there have been examples of nasty failures with fluid dripping from the center mirror.

On the advice of my salesman, I got these on my '07. it's a nice feature, works well and has an override switch if you want to disable it. Some days, I wish my Boxster had this option as well.
For the price, I think it's a nice addition.

Oh no, another feature I missed in the manual? I didn't know the auto dimming could be over-ridden. Not sure why I'd want to, but just curious how it is done. I know I know, RTFM.

There is button on the mirror which when pressed turns it off. The green light goes out. And the mirror stops dimming. You will notice the lights behind you get brighter.

Thanks. I've had one of these cars for almost 2 years and never knew that button was there! Maybe it is time to initiate another "things you didn't know about your car" again.

I override it occasionally because a cabriolet inherently has more ambient light shining on the sensor that controls those mirrors, often darkening them prematurely.

I made sure my car had them when I bought the car, but I haven't used them since the day I got stopped by police at night because I wasn't able to make out the shape or the car behind me when it dimmed and I accelerated

What is the minus you ask? How about the inability to actually see where a car is behind you. Or what kind of a car it is. Or whether it is even a car at all. Or whether the headlight you see in your side mirror is the left one or the right one? A total waste and totally dangerous.

Have had it for years in all of my cars and would not order a car without it. Like Dan, I occasionally override it when the top is down because there is more more ambient light shining on the sensor that controls the dimming and it sometimes causes them to darken prematurely.

We have had them now in several vehicles. I especially like them in the '09 911 since the exterior mirrors are dimmed, in addition to the interior. This works very well if you are driving in traffic at night. In Porsche, the dimming is gradual to the exterior light level and does not hinder seeing other vehicles IMHO.
The only complaint that I have is that Porsche makes you pay extra for a safety feature, which is standard on other vehicles such as BMW.

I have them and really like it. Regarding leaking... my Audi S4 inside mirror leaked oil all over the console in the car... it was a mess......no issues with the 997 (so far )

I really like the fact that it dimms the side mirrors too. Where I live about 80% of the vehicles on the road are SUVs and pickup trucks with headlights at the same height as the mirrors on my 911. Getting blinded by non-dimmed side mirrors is a safety hazard all on its own.
