i didnt get a cayman s cuz it felt underpowered. but looking back on it, a cayman S with a supercharger has more power and is cheaper than a 911S. So i dunno, maybe i should have gone that route.

2. I agree the 911 sounds better, the Cayman S is a noisy car.

The BIGGEST drawback of the Cayman for us was
FAN NOISE
Since it's mid-engined, the exhaust fan often runs to remove heat from the engine box.
It's not a pretty sound and dominates the P car symphony when cruising around town at low speed with the windows down.
i'd have to say it's a deal killer for me
cheers

Well, several Brits car mag. have reported that the new 2009 Cayman S sounds better than the 997.2. Apparently the new 3.4 DFI engine is amazing (ref.Autocar) and pull very strong to the red line. They couldn't figure out why the Cayman sounded better but it does. They also said that the 997.2 lost a lot of its soul cause of the new "tame" sounding engine.
Add LSD and you clearly have a winner. They agreed that the 6 speed is more fun than the PDK for a Cayman S, unlike the 997.2 which is more of a GT.
LSD, PCCBs, Bucket seats and best of it...no sunroof.

Porsche had this LSD on display at the LA Auto Show. I didn't see any description of what transmission it was from. Whatever it was from it sure is a puny looking LSD with only 2 friction plates in it.

The Cayman interior is too small, too cramped and tight - IMHO. It might be a great drive, but you also have to "live" with a car.

The truth is that the Carrera platform appeals to many buyers, the pure drivers, the historic signifigance buyers, and the prestige buyers. (and others)
The prestige buyers are most likely the ones that appreciate superior interior space of the Carrera
All would be turned off the most from another platform being the racing halo car, except the real racers who could care less what it says on the rear of the car.
No other manufacturer has this issue. But then again, no other car has such an iconic recognizable profile as does he 911.

To me this is the single biggest reason the 997 will always be #1

However, has anyone noticed the price of the new one? This month's issue of Winding Road tested one and loved it. However, the "as-tested" price was a stunning $95k. Now granted this one was pretty fully optioned, but $95k? Can't you about buy a used 7GT3 for that price? No way I would even consider a Cayman S at anything approaching that price point.

No back seats in a Cayman. I'd rather have back seats and extra storage than some super go car in the Cayman,--and besides, I know how to drive a rear wheel drive car,--been doing it since the 1970s.
