How long before I should replace tires?

Just about at 20K on original PS2's and getting ready to replace rears...still a 32nd or so above wear bars on inside tread!
Just was quoted $500/ea installed-balanced for PS2 N1 295/30 19. Call Radial Tire (301.585.2740) and ask for Paul.

I have 8500 miles on Contisportcontact 2s and the rears are nearly completely gone. Is this atypical for this low of mileage or should I just accept that this is truly the most expensive aspect of owning these cars? Any suggestion of a tire that may last a little longer?
