I am about to embark on a PSE install. I plan on using a switch in the ashtray as others have done. I was wondering if there are any other alternatives for a power source other then running power from the fuse panel?

You want a switched power source so that let's out the cigar lighters or accessory connections. They are hot all the time.
I spliced into a 12 volt switched line that went to the DME located in the passenger compartment. It was relatively easy to route the wire under the carpet to the PSE on/off switch I mounted in the ash tray assembly.
The vacuum solenoid draws very little current so you basically can use any switched power source without fear of overloading it.
