Default 997 Mrk 2 - RMS issue addressed?

I've been researching the purchase of a 997, in doing so I came a across some information that I'm not sure is true. Here's the cliffs; 997's may be prone to rear main seal failure due to a design flaw. This is not the case for 997TT or 997GT3 models because the engine case is based on the 993, which never had this issue.

Is this information accurate? And if so, has it been addressed/fixed with in the new direct-injection engines?

Thanks.

996 & 997 GT3 have had RMS leakage.

While I'm sure there are instances of 997 RMS failures, it looks to me like they are pretty rare. I've been on this board for a while now, and heard very few (I'm not sure I remember one actually) reports of RMS failure. The 997 engine is pretty robust.

Thanks (to all), I appreciate the considered response(s).

a 996 with a 997 replaced seal seems to be pretty solid. 997's have a 997 seal on their 996 engine...

I had a RMS leak on my 986S before. Frankly, it is not such a big deal... Just a month after I picked up my new 986S, I found a couple drops of oil on the garage floor in the morning. I brought my car to the dealer around lunch time, they gave me another loaner 986 to drive for the day, and at the end of the day my 986S was fixed and washed, under warranty. Since then, no more leaks for seven years.

Now I have my 997S for more than a year, and no RMS issue. I have been around in this forum since the 997/997S released, and I seldom heard RMS mentioned.

On the other hand, if we visit the 997GT3/997GT3RS forum, there are many RMS cases on its GT1-based engine. I am surprised to hear that as well, but just an example that we never know which Porsche model will have what problem. May be Porsche fixes the RMS on the new 997/997S DFI engine, but may be it will also introduce other new issue on this new engine... Again, never know. Just buy the car you like, and don't let the RMS alter your choice otherway.

Regards,

RMS has been rarer in 997s, but it happens. I think that one of the reasons for the new 997.2 engine design was to fix that design flaw.

In roughly mid 05 Porsche once again redesigned the RMS, and this one is working. I have only replaced one of the new style seals. There are some 05 997's that have the old style seal.
