Default Difficulty filling gas tank

On my recently acquired 07 Targa 4S I've noticed a problem in filling the gas tank. When it should be able to take 14 or 15 gallons, the nozzle trips off at around 9 or 10 gallons. The only way I can fill it more is to gently squeeze the nozzle and fill very slowly for the top third tank. This didn't happen on my 05 C2S Cab. Has anyone else had this problem?

This is not new. Try to fill slower, fully insert the nozzle, and rotate it sideways along the length of the car. Filling C4/C4S tanks can be a bit trickier.

I believe this is a venting problem with the tank or the filler neck. If pressure is not released as gas enters the tank it can trip the shutoff mechanism. How Porsche does this I am not sure but I once had a similar problem in a Nissan which the dealer fixed by replacing a vent tube.

Default Same thing here....what I do is break the suction by pulling on the..

rubber suction thing...that usually does the trick. All you have to do is break the seal and it will continue filling without problems. Try it next time.

It would be nice to know just how much fuel is actually in the tank. I am never sure how much to top it off when filling the tank for fear of any overflow. I work too hard on the paint finish to want to see gas guzzling out and down my front fender.

While I know every gas pump may be different, is it generally safe to assume that once you get the initial cutoff, you still have maybe a gallon or two to go? It seems I can get another 1 and 1/2 gallons into my Acura.

Now, for those more mathematically inclined: When completing a fill and resetting the trip function, the screen gives a new estimated miles to go #. If I divide that by the last mpg figure on that screen before it resets, I get an answer that says I have about 14 gallons now in the tank - way under the 16.9 gallon capacity of the tank. I wonder if I am leaving it that under filled when I "fill-up." If that isn't accurate, does dividing the "miles to go" by the current mpg figure yield an accurate measure of how many gallons are left in the tank when I pull into the gas station?

With a trip computer in the PCM, you'd think the actual number of usable gallons left could be displayed.

Alright, have I been **** enough on this topic? All I really want to know is if I can make the trip from near DC to eastern Long Island (340 miles) on one tank if it is really full and I average, say, 22mpg (non S).

"Try it and let me know" is bound to be one retort.

You should be able to cover 340 miles on a tank.

I also have this problem, but only with a few of the pumps at the station I usually fill up at. This happens with my Carrera and my Boxster. I just try to use a different pump whenever I can and it only cuts out early with about 1/4 gallon more to go. I think it has something to do with the calibration of the sensor in the pump that cuts off the flow of gas.

I have the same problem with my 07 C4S. Stops a few gallons short of full. Seems to happen with only certain pumps. I've tried having the nozzle only part way in, stopping, waiting and starting again, and even rocking the car. Nothing seems to work. After 27,000 miles I've resigned myself to this quirk.

I have this problem with a Boxster which is worse at certain filling stations.
The way I fill to 100% capacity is have the nozzle turned some 90 degrees whilst filling. After the first click I take the nozzle a bit out, still turned. When I get a second click after less than a gallon usually, the tank is full.
I suspect it has to do with venting but I don't want to start changing parts by trial and error.

I have this problem on the 997TT and the RS. Try turning the nozzle upside down when you pump. This worked for me on both cars.

Have you tried a different pump or station? That happens to me on one of the gas stations here, I guess they set their back up pressure sensing switches in their pumps a little too sensitive. Also, try pulling the nozzle out a little.
