Default 2009 997S PDK laps 7:50 on the 'Ring.

Just in -- pretty impressive considering Walter Rohrl did 7:49 in a 997TT couple years ago.

Porsche's new PDK transmission trims 911 lap time on the 'Ring

Porsche decided to do a little 'Ring running in three different 2009-spec 911 models and quietly let the results slip during a press event. A 2009 911S fitted with Porsche's new twin clutch system (PDK: Porsche Doppelkupplung), Porsche Active Stability Management and "sport tires" took the top place, scoring a 7:50. The new PDK shifts a whopping 60-percent faster than the old Tiptronic S.

The first place getter was followed by what is assumed to be a 2009 911S with a manual transmission some eight seconds back, and then a 2008 911 S another four seconds back, at 8:02. There's no word on who was driving the cars, or what exactly counts as a "sport tire."

According to FastestLaps.com, Walter Rohrl did a 7:49 in a 997 turbo two years ago. If the next year's 911S is really that close to the twin-blower, that's not a bad feat. Still, the Cadillac CTS-V did the thing in 7:59 -- and so did the C6 Corvette that puts the current Porsche to bed and is an A-pillar away from the 2009... but who's counting?

That's a very respectable ring time of 7:50.
I think the article has their numbers wrong though: the 997TT is 7:40, 997 GT3RS 7:42 for comparison.
There is no doubt however that the PDK is faster unless this report is total BS !!

Can you imagine when Porsche gets the Ferarri F1/E-Diff type system refined? If Porsche can do low times with a stick, and lower with the PDK, give it time before they do the whole package and I can bet it will be a whole lot better than Ferarri's as I think Porsche is learing from Ferarri's mistakes and go from there in the Porsche fashion... slowly, but well designed.

Sad not to see real paddles, but there's a reason for this now. I think it's easier to offer what they developed now to get it out in the market for '09 orders as opposed to design a whole new steering wheel column and have that crash tested, air bag tested etc. This way, they just add the needed wiring and bingo, PDK access. Maybe in time they may offer a Techequipment version of "paddles" until a new column is made for the real ones.

I can't imagine sitting in the passenger seat while Walter takes you screaming around the Ring in one of the new cars. It must be the most incredible sensation!!

You can compare some times here:

Glad to see it's faster than and E92 M3

Good to see Porsche reacting... The tipronic was really a prehistoric gearbox by today standards
