One of the recent articles on the 997Mk2 indicated that "conservatively" Porsche expects 50% of the new NA 911s to be ordered with PDK.

True. Still it replaces the tiptronic not supplements it in the product line. I interpret that to mean the the automatic mode is the primary mode. This will be the transmission for people who need or want an automatic in their 911. That is what I mean by "... modern Tiptronic...."

.think i follow..but even the SMG's have clutches, they're just automated..and in the case of the 360F1..prone to burn out

you can't jump shift (1-3) in a DCT car...shifting is sequential...although i suppose the manufacturer could allow you to programme such a shift...

unrelated....why are you down at 165ft on compressed AIR...that's Trimix territory...

Sorry, can you clarify this for me? I haven't really checked the ordering guide yet since I was assuming info on the C4/C4S/Targas weren't available yet.
Does this mean they're only offering tiptronic/6speed for the 09' targa models or are not doing targas at all for 09'?

The lack of true paddle shifters is the problem for me.

I would order PDK without the launch control, I hate that dash mounted chrono. How often am I going to use launch control? after the "fun factor" wears off, likely not too often.

i was able to convince my wife that her purchase of the new 997 required SC to go along with her PDK .

thanks for the interesting links you've been posting.

cheers

one of the best qualities of the porsche has always been it's great shifter-and part of the fun driving it is shifting it. with these new transmissions, we are making our carreras into 5 series bmws. i would rather save the 4 grand and have fun shifting my porsche. just my opinion.

I agree. I love shifting and modulating the clutch is one of the great joys of driving. I fear, err know, that in 10 years the clutch will be an afterthough in automotive design. The PDK is just one rendition of the new environment. I'm not crazy about it and wish that they had chosen an Italian F1 style interface.

Either way, this is a step forward. Not in the direction I had hoped, but they didn't ask me.
