ahh it most definitely is not a very modern tiptronic...
there is NO torque convertor
Dual Clutch transmission - very different technology, first applied by Porsche 956 c. 1981
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin-clutch_gearbox
distinct again from sequential manuals formerly deployed by Ferrari/BMW
worth noting that both Ferrari in the California and BMW in the latest M3 are introducing Dual Clutch systems...

.think i follow..but even the SMG's have clutches, they're just automated..and in the case of the 360F1..prone to burn out
you can't jump shift (1-3) in a DCT car...shifting is sequential...although i suppose the manufacturer could allow you to programme such a shift...
unrelated....why are you down at 165ft on compressed AIR...that's Trimix territory...

Does this mean they're only offering tiptronic/6speed for the 09' targa models or are not doing targas at all for 09'?

one of the best qualities of the porsche has always been it's great shifter-and part of the fun driving it is shifting it. with these new transmissions, we are making our carreras into 5 series bmws. i would rather save the 4 grand and have fun shifting my porsche. just my opinion.

I agree. I love shifting and modulating the clutch is one of the great joys of driving. I fear, err know, that in 10 years the clutch will be an afterthough in automotive design. The PDK is just one rendition of the new environment. I'm not crazy about it and wish that they had chosen an Italian F1 style interface.
Either way, this is a step forward. Not in the direction I had hoped, but they didn't ask me.
