Default Polling on 997's rattle noises...

All 996s develop over time internal rattles and panel creaking noises. Most cars rattle when they drive over rough railroad tracks, but others, including 996s, as they age tend do rattle over anything other than smooth surfaces.

Now... the 997 has a stiffer chassis and most came with PASM. My question, for 997 owners who have accumulated at least 20,000 miles, how quiet are your cars?

Default No Rattles at 18K

Not quite at 20K miles, but close. No rattle issues for me at this point.

Driver's side door started around... 8k miles or so. The dealer "fixed" it, made a point to tell me that they had 2 separate guys verify it was fixed, but then it came back within days.

I have to say that I'm rather surprised at how well my cabriolet is holding up. I have 26,800 on the odometer (2 years) and the only noise I'm starting to get is from the rear bow (top up) from the headliner,--known issue, and under warranty.

Also ran into a minor noise on the cab right at my left ear position,--found a torx screw backing out at the top of the side window frame. A little Loctite did the trick...

Something near the passenger front airbag that i could never find. Had it in both C2S and GT3. Other than that, silent.

My instrument cluster rattled, until I inserted a rubber spacer and the problem was solved. Now, it is OCD quiet.

8K miles...and some annoying rattles.

The first was the passenger rear window...the dealer had to remove the window, "move it" and replace the weatherstripping. Recently I have another noise that sounds like the folding sections of the rear seats are rattling against their mountings.

in the air...mine rattles a bit too. Would you mind advising where/how (pic would be nice) you added the spacer to eleviate the rattle.

20,400 miles and no rattles. I did have the rear bow clip rattle on the cabriolet at around 10K, but it was fixed under warranty and has not returned.

Well, I don't have a pic handy, but essentially it entails:

- a small strip of rubber (0.5"w x 1.5"l x 1/8"thick) - I used a leftover piece of rubber from a bike cyclometer that is used when mounting the display to the bike handlebars.
- I simply folded it in half and wedged it between the oil pressure gauge and the dash lengthwise(I had to use one hand to pry the instrument cluster down and toward me to permit the rubber to be inserted.)

It seems strange to do to a $140K car, but it stopped the rattle of the instrument cluster and can't be detected by passengers. I can see it if I crain my neck down to look at the cluster from a lower perspective....in the right light.

YMMV.

Rearview mirror seems to have a rattle on rough roads, also the instrument cluster -- I'd be interested in more info on the spacer as well. Can't take my eyes off the road to look for the source of the rattle as I'm moving too fast....
