Not good news for us Porsche fans. The CAFE standards that will take effect in 2015 will impose fairly arbitrary and ludicrous requirements on Porsche, the implication of which seems to be that Porsche will simply choose to pay fines for noncompliance than to engineer their products to achieve MPG requirements that seem virtually impossible for high performance cars. Guess who will pay for the fines Porsche chooses to incur as a result of voluntary noncompliance? Hint...it's not Porsche.

Actually, its a double barrel attack. These US standards for CAFE, and the Euro standards for CO2 emissions.
I've posted this over and over again, and will do it one more time - the sports cars and full size luxury sedans produced over the next 5 years, will be the best gasoline powered cars EVER TO BE PRODUCED. It's all downhill from there.
We'll be keeping these cars a long time, buying them used, maintaining them and passing them to our kids. It's going to get really bad.

This article first suggests that the standards will be developed and applied on a per-model basis, and then later speaks of average mpg requirements for manufacturers based on the average size of their lineup.
So they're giving incentives to automakers that produce giant gas guzzlers? Hmm. Maybe Porsche should make a limited production schoolbus...

my understanding is that the porsche vw / audi acquisition activity is intended to spread the CAFE requirements across multiple holdings keeping porsche able to continue with low volume high performance autos. this will spread the fule mileage across a bunch of models.
