Resonator in air box

Resonator in air box
Can someone tell me what the resonator in the air box is for? It seems to divert some of the air right into the throttle valve rather than going into the MAF sensor. Note: I have a basic 997 without the valve in the resonator.

I think the resonator is to do with noise reduction at certain rpm. It's possible to block it off (the aftermarket cold air induction kits do this or you can DIY - lots of threads on this topic) I thought all models had the valve??

I thought just the S had the resonator.

The resonator is designed to cancel out an undesirable frequency which occurs at a specific range of engine RPM. If the resonator is not used, then there is a booming which happens as the engine RPM increases.
There is no airflow inside this device and does not draw air away from the engine. There is a very small pressure drop which occurs due to air catching the edge of the intersection of the tuning pipe and the zip-tube.
If you want more information on this, check out some of my previous posts or PM me.

Thanks for all the responses. I found a link that explains how the resonator works. I decided to just cap off the resonator and the rubber air duct leading into the throttle body just to see if I can increased the intake sound.
