Rock Chip Repair Question: Ballpark costs
I haven't ever experience so much road debris in my life until I started driving this car. But then again, maybe I didn't pay any attention to it while in the Tahoe.
Anyway, I now am the proud owner of three rock chips on my hood, deep enough to see through the paint to the metal in one spot. I have never had rock chips repaired before. What would I be looking at here in terms of price, just looking for order of magnitude, hundreds, thousands?
My hope is that they can spot fix these without needing to repaint the entire hood. I am interested in your opinions before I take it down to the dealer for an estimate and subsequent venture shield install.

A good independent will charge about $100 for one chip - probably a better deal (per chip) for three. BTW, non-mettalic paints (guards red, speed yellow, black, and white) are much easier to match than the "optional" colors. I always go for GR; I like it and it's easy to repair.

I used it on my guards red 987S and it turned out pretty nice. I don't know about black but for half a hundred I would give it a try. Just don't cut corners and take your time.
Cheers

I have no experience with the products above, but I'm skeptical. Each Dealer subs their routine touch-ups to touch-up specialists These guys do a decent job, and they don't charge much if you deal directly with them, rather than through your Dealer. Hood touch-ups are the most challenging, and if you are a perfectionist, you'll have to have the entire hood repainted which won't be cheap.
So if I were you, I'd call my service tech or salesman and ask them who they use, and call the guy directly. You can then meet the guy at the Dealership, and he'll be happy to give you an estimate.

Sorry I didn't take any pictures and I traded the car for a Black 997.
You can see the Boxster at http://porsche.schneidernelson.com/
The chips I repaired were right below the passenger side mirror and I don't think they even noticed them.
I didn't have any on the hood because it has a clear bra as does the new car. I don't think there is a person alive that can fix an individual rock chip on a black hood and not have it noticeable. If you want it perfect you are looking at a total respray of the panel.

I agree, for $100, I'd rather trust someone who has years of practice rather than myself. But, if you have a steady hand, and a willingness to experiment on your P-car, you may want to try it. Bottom line: not for the feint of heart. But, I tend to be somewhat ham-fisted at finese do-it-yourselves.

Thanks for the info everyone. With Basalt Black Mettalic being so different, I think I will just bite the bullet and do the dealership thing, or try to contact their subs directly.

I've repaired my 2 Basalt Black rock chips myself using the factory touch up kit, and while not perfect, it looks much better than seeing through the paint to the metal. I've received 3 more rock chips since the repair, so I have to do it again.

On black the paint chips white, so for any dark colored Porsche it is important to have paint protection film applied to the prone chip areas.

Here is an interesting article run in the Chicago PCA newsletter on Dr. Colorchip. I think the author is probably a PCA member, maybe Chicago, not sure. Another non-site review of interest anyway. Basalt Black should be an easy color.

another view is that while they are great cars...they are cars cars drive on roads, and roads have debris...a few chips are inevitable My hood, only 2 months old, has 1-2 small chips however, the car still drives like it did with no chips I am as **** as the next guy, but c'mon a chip? who cares Now, a door ding...that REALLY pushes my buttons......Luckily, those are rare (I have none at present)
