Not to get ahead, but is it a bad time to buy a 997?

I keep hearing about the next 911, will it be out this year? If it won't hit shores of the US until late next year, then I probably don't care. But if its orderable this year, should I be buying a 911? Is it going to be harder to sell once the new one comes out?
Thanks for the advice, I am considering a Carrera 4

Porsches are evolutionary not revolutionary. There have been miss-steps, but each is better than the one before. The 996 left allot of people cold and the 997 cured that. The next one will probably have the DSG type gearbox and minor styling tweaks at best. You really want to wait another year? The 4S version will be at least that. Base on what I have seen of the tail lights I wouldn't wait. The current car is pretty sweet.

I just bought one and decided I'm glad I have one that is new but as close to traditional 911 as possible. Also I like the idea of having the last year of a proven model.I never saw a new design out without it being tweeked in 6 months. We all know you can't go wrong either way as you will have a new Porsche.

I'm placing my order on a new C4S next week.
I considered waiting for the facelift, but there were a few things that made me decide to order now:
1) There is nothing in the facelift that wows me. The tweaks to the styling aren't major. The LED lights aren't really my favorite. And, I want a 6-speed, even if DSG is offered (and the offering of a DSG is not a foregone conclusion).
2) I get to drive the car for 6-8 months longer than if I waited.
3) Dealers are more willing to discount cars now than when the facelift comes out (I presume).
I also plan to keep this car for at least 5 years, so I'm buying now and having fun....NOW.

I think the current car is perfect aesthetically. Don't like what I have seen in pics of new tailights or front facia. As stated above, unless the DSG is on your mind, get rolling with a 997 now. Of course, the new car will likely have a bit more power.
A friend of mine who had 4 911s in late 60s-early 80s, is amazed at how much the current 997 brings back all the virtues of his "old" cars but has the power and technology currently available. I bring my car over to his house all the time just to **** him off LOL.....( he does not have the storage for another car and can not be comfy driving a 997 daily)

Doctorpcar,
When you say the "next 911" do you mean the 998? For sure, there's no way that a 998 will be out in the next 2 years.
As for a facelift, yeah, that'll happen, but who cares?
There are tons of threads that deal with this subject both past and present. Don't put any dreams on hold because of 'what ifs.' That's my two cents.

Unless price is no concern whatsoever, especially if you want a 6 speed, I say buying right now is prime time. 10% discounts are available if you shop around. I think the facelift 997 will be most attractive for buyers wanting an alternative to tip. Of course, the '09 car will be incredible across the board, just like the current car, but I think it will come with a fatter MSRP and a lower discount. There really is no bad time to buy - just depends on what your priorities are and how much you are willing to pay.

The facelifted car will have direct injection yielding more power and better economy, but as others mentioned it will be more expensive and have less of a discount, and personally I'm not fond of the styling tweaks. The last thing the 997 needs is a longer nose, the front grill/light combo looks straight from the Boxster, and the restyled rear lights and valence don't do a thing for me. I'm hoping to replace my 2005 with a 2008.

And what I hear about the longer nose... is that true? That is the last thing these cars need is more front end overhang, ugh - mistake in my opinion.

To my eye there is more space between the leading edge of the trunk and the front of the car. It appears to come to more of a 'point' than the current car.
