Question DME question

I have searched the archive for DME issues. I am looking at a 2006 C4 demo car(450miles total), with #of ignitions range 1 of 209, and range 2 of 17. Operating hours is 50.6. Is a leakdown and compression test necessary in this case? Is any range 2 overrev acceptable?

most here would say no problem until you hit ranges 5 & 6. I would be concerned with even 3 & 4s, but 2 is not an issue.

Range 2 overrevs are mechanically produced. Someone put the car into 2nd gear when it should have been in fourth. A dealer will normally void a warranty if there is a range 2 overrev followed by engine failure.

To put the numbers into perspective, my last car, a 996, with 70,000 hard miles (~20,000 on a race track) had 65,500 range one overrevs and only 125 range 2. I would not buy the car.

Also, leakdown will not help you. mechanical overrevs produce things like bent connecting rods, not poor compression.

This has changed for the 997. The 997 now has 6 ranges, not just 2 as the 996 DME did.

Therefore, in a 996, a range 2 overrev would designate a heavily forced downshift.

In a 997, a range 2 overrev is possible without a forced downshift.

I would not worry about a few hits in Range 3 on a 997. If you search for "DME ranges" you'll get the table here on Rennlist.

A buddy of mine picked up the durametric cable/software, and I've used it a few times on my car. I've noticed that you can get range 1-3 hits just by hitting the rev limiter. 5-6 are undoubtedly due to a mechanical overrev ...

Yessir, with my limited knowledge I would concur.
