Throw a set of AWE headers, cats, and mufflers on and really enjoy the cold start music Ahhh...

Like Coochas said; some like it. In the garage it reminds me of starting a '60's DONZI when the exhaust stacks burble in/out of the water. My wife says things like; "You paid how much for that?!" (and she liked the DONZI)

The problem with that, is that Porsche changes their approved list more often than most change their socks. What is on the list today may not be on the list next time, depending on whether the oil manufacturer is wiling to pay for the review by Porsche.

If you are among those who believe you must use what is on the approved list, then use the 5W50 Syntec oil, year round, unless you live in extreme cold conditions. In that case, use a 5W40 oil in the coldest months. This will also protect your warranty. Using any of the oils listed in your manual will protect your warranty regardless of what is on the approved list.

I run 15W50 most of the year. This was the factory fill but is no longer on the "approved" list. I have run this oil or 5W50 since the car was new. I burn no oil, leak no oil and have no valve noise. I also run a higher effective compression than any stock TT. You will get many opinions here, but I would never put anything less than a 5W50 when running in mild climates.
I believe the reason for the oil spec on our P-car's (997) is strictly due to the vario-cam function.

It's not. Even Porsche says you can run 5W50 motor oil.

Been thinking about doing something to that effect but I don't want to make the car any louder.

It's not just the noise on start up but slow speed/lower rpm take offs from a stop..the sound is quite poor.

Just Picked up a 2008 997 C2 S on 10/01/07, I heard the same garbbled sound from the exhaust. definitely thought I needed a new muffler and wanted to take the car back to the dealer. After the car sat idle for about 35-40 seconds the garbble went away and regular tone came back. It's been working that way ever since.

The startup airflow pump (or what you ma call it, do hicky) is the culprit, I wish it made that sound ALL the time!

before the cats get hot and start doing their job, the emissions mgmt system is struggling to compensate. This happens on lots of modern cars, what is the Porsche engine emissions rating, ULEV or SULEV?

I dont' think that sound is from the lifters, it seemed like it was exhaust related and my C2S did it until the day I sold it. Seems like its normal and chalked it up to character. True its not sophisticated sounding, but it only did it at start up and went away very quickly. My friend with a C2S also exhibited the same sound. I think its normal. I doubt switching oil will change the sound.
