How come everybody wears a front plate except the 996?

TR6 is in storage where it's been a long time. It needs a few things. Body is good but a new interior is required along with new tires, belts hoses ....
One of these days.
It was also my dad's car and it's the car on which I learned to drive stick.

Chris,
nice car collections. Wonder if you have ever tracked your 997S. Will appreciate your driving comparison between the 997S and GT3 on the road and the track. Thanks.

I went through 2006 and did a bunch of PCA track events and a lot of km at the newly opened Calabogie Motorsports Park last fall. The 997 is a great car. For me, on the track, I was never comfortable in the car though. My helmet was always wedged against the headliner (stupid sunroof!), seat was too far back from the steering wheel (head on headliner). I had a choice to make. I looked into installing seats but I don't fit well in GT3 seats. My 997 is just too nice a car to butcher so I left it stock, other than a more aggressive alignment and Pagid Blue pads and then some Toyo RA-1s this spring.
So I decided to put my deposit down on a 2008 997 GT3. I was all set to trade then I got to thinking and did the math. For a little more than trading my car in and paying the difference I could go to the US, pick up a 996 GT3 and KEEP my 997. If I found I didn't use it then I could sell it. No harm. At that point I could do an aggressive alignment, install seats etc. Well I drove a 996 GT3 at Tremblant at speed this spring and that made my decision. I gave up my spot in line for the 2008. In retrospect it was not the best idea to drive it because I knew I had to have one. So I spent a few months looking around and picked up the red GT3 in the pics in July from a broker in Chicago. I drove it back. It is an '04 and only had 980 miles on it.
The GT3 is a great track car but compared to the 997S it is awful on the street. Loud, darty and the ride is punishing over broken pavement. The 997 has a beautiful interior, comfortable seats, comfortable ride, heated seats

On the track I prefer the mechanical (non-PASM) suspension of the GT3. I feel everything - especially in my seats w/o the bottom cushion. I prefer not having a sunroof because I get more headroom. I LOVE the 8k redline of the GT3. I like that there are no nannies keeping watch over me (other than ABS). It is me driving the car and I am well aware of the ramifications if I make a mistake.
I keep thinking I should sell the 997 and get a sedan or something but everytime I drive it I have a big grin. It is a great car. Both are great cars. In the car dept. I have been blessed although their cost (my dad) was way too high.
If you have any other questions let me know.

Beautiful collection! Love the color combo of the three against the backdrop of the trees.
Just get rid of the front license plate if you can

Chris,
Thanks for a most thorough comparison. Just came back from a Track day yesterday. Had a great time, but I think I'm using the wrong wheels for my 997S. The 19" Techart felt heavy. Think I'll go for an 18" setup next year. If I were you, I will also do the 997S and 996GT3 combo instead of just one 997GT3. Enjoy them!

All my life I've wanted a Porsche. After my dad passed in 2003 I said "F" it! and ordered the 2005 997 in Dec. '04, just before Christmas.
I stopped at the dealership on the way home from the internment. It was the Old Man's fault making me grow up with the current hottest fastest thing from Germany that he could get his hands on.
