What if the oil level sensor is malfunctioning and you've been overfilling all along...

I still can't believe Porsche got rid of the dip stick.

1.6 US quarts per 650 miles sounds like a throwback to the air/oil cooled days, Dan...

If there's visible smoke on startup, you have an issue. I'd call Porsche Customer Committment!

1.6/650 exceeds even Porsches ridiculous standard for "normal" oil consumption. At these numbers a borescoping should not be necessary. They normally monitor the oil usage at the dealership to verify excessive oc themselves and engine replacement should be forthcoming. However: they will check for potentially damaging overrevs via the black box. If they find a high level overrev you will have an issue to deal with. Good luck

My 996 used 2 quarts every 400 miles or so. After a long documentation process(6 months), PCNA replaced my engine. Having a good relationship with the service manager is key. Go to a different dealership. If all else fails get an attorney. lemon laws exist for this reason. Just document everything and you will easily win. You will get to drive the car and than maybe get a new one at the end. call 1800mylemon

This is good advice. Try the relationship/PCNA/documentation approach. IF that fails, then opt for the attorney/documentation/the hell with the relationship approach.

It is imperative you get this fixed however. It is obviously difficult to enjoy your car (it would be for anyone) it its present conditon.

You cannot even sell this car to someone else without disclosing this issue, which will be discovered anyway through a pre-purchase inspection. This will render the vehicle almost valueless in its present condition, as the Buyer pool would be extremely limited.

This may have been mentioned earlier but do call Customer Commitment at 1800Porsche. In my experience the Regional Reps are very helpful in negotiating with problem dealerships.

Many thanks for all of your advice...it was most helpful. I ended up taking the car to a different dealer, but before doing so, I learned my lesson and used my phone to video the smoke cloud. In addition to playing the video for the service manager I insisted they do a leakdown test before I would take the car home...long story short it had been running on 5cyls and I now have her back with a new engine.

Hey, that is great news! Now keep track of oil consumption on the new engine

Excellent news. And if your new - or remanufactured engine - is anything like mine, you will never look back. My replacement pulls like a train and I haven't added any Mobil 1 in over 9000 miles. Now that is within acceptable limits!
Enjoy your car and congratulations on standing up for yourself and not letting the most profitable car company in the world (by some margin) - or their representatives - brush you off.

On occasion when I start my Porsche I get a puff of blue smoke. Additionally I burned one quart over 5500 miles the first year I owned it. I know have 8500 miles and have burned a 1/3 of a quart (approximately 3 months ago). Does any of this sound normal or should I get my engine checked out?

Glad the different dealer suggestion worked out for you...lots of "oil free" miles to you
