Default Talk me out of a Vantage Convertible

So my beloved 997S is in the classifieds as I have the hots for a GT3.

I am sitting having coffee outside Peets near Marin Aston Martin and a red Vantage Convertible drives by. What a sexy looking car. I pop in and talk to the salesman; he has 1 convertible on the floor and a few parked up, no wait list whatsoever (a bad sign?) MSRP ranging $130k-$148k.

Please, please talk me out of it

As I understand:

Positives - looks, sound, interior, did I mention looks?

Okay - handling, steering, brakes (a GT not a sports car), finish

Bad - underpowered, will depreciate like a stone(?)

Thoughts appreciated Rennlisters..

It will make the Porsches` reliability seem like a Honda! The only + that i can see is the visual one(no pun intended!).

Gorgeous car. Definitely on my list of cars to buy when I win the lottery tomorrow. Probably not a top choice as a daily driver but for a weekend cruiser, etc. the looks and sound are hard to beat.

I went through the same path before I bought my 07 997S. The Aston has killer exhaust note and beautiful look. But I eventually went for the 997S.

Here is an interesting Top Gear review (997S vs Aston vs M6). Fun to watch.

With best regards,

One more "bad" item to mention - potential repair/reliability issues? Any issues will be covered by the warranty, but it could be in the shop more than it is in your garage or on the road.

As an aside, god that M6 is ugly at the back

Ooh the 911S won.

Interesting when they were debating power they never mentioned weight, the Aston and BMW are pretty heavy.

The AM's depreciation will be even worse than water-cooled Porsches. The sure sign of this is unsold inventory on dealers' lots.

Haven't seen the convertible but the coupe is certainly a gorgeous car. Too bad they went the GT route just like Porsche is doing. It's a waste of a dry-sump engine and a rigid chassis design.

Not sure what to make of anyone cross shopping a GT3 with an AMV8 convertible!

I have been driving the Vantage coupe for the past two months and if you take out fuse #22, the exhaust will be even louder and like an F1 car!!! I like my 997s better as I am a practical person. But, if you want to be a celebrity and have lots of people gawk at you and your ride and give you compliments, the AMV8 is the way to go. I get at least one or two looks or thumbs up from people everytime I take it out and I don't drive that much. For me, it is just a temporary car and I am getting rid of it in the next couple of weeks as my dealer guaranteed me a buyback value. Otherwise, I could not live with the depreciation that these English cars take.

I had my affair with this AMV8 pornstar and while no normal girl will ever be the same, I need to get back to the stability and soundworthiness of my 997s! I will miss her but she carries some tradeoffs too!

I seriously took a look at one and came away after 3 test drives being disappointed and underwhelmed. It just doesn't feel sharp enough as a driver. I never felt I could fling it into a corner and really lean on the suspension. The engine is nice, but so is PSE. The interior is nice, but for that kind of money I could get a natural leather, contrasting stitching, sports adaptive etc...

I love the look and the idea of ordering one and seeing it being built at the factory, but the ownership experience would need to be a lot sharper.

Buying the AMV crossed my mind, too. A beautiful car, no doubt. But make sure to take a look at the roadster when its top is closed. While I really love the looks of the coupe and of the open roadster, I completely disliked the roadster's look with the top up. Too 350ZR-ish. Even worse from behind.

The AM looks great standing still. Don't worry about losing your shirt on it. If you can dump a 997 for an AM this quickly what's another $40K?

You won't be happy with the handling and the power, after coming out of a 997.

Go watch the comparison between the 997 the aston and the M6 that top gear did.
