Default Educating the Tiptronic

I'm being told on what seems to be the way to get the Triptronic memory to behave and shift down more aggressively in a new 997 C4S. To stomp on it to get the car to start off in 1st. But you can't go over the maximum RPM in a new car. People are looking at me as I wait for the car to shift up after flying away from a light. Sometimes it shifts when I let off the gas and sometimes it just hangs in 1st forever.

Is it necessary to floor it all the time when the car is new? To educate the the Tip for the life of the car?

I gave up with trying to get the Tiptonic S on my 997S to shift properly either in normal or sport mode. I just put it in manual and shift on the steering wheel.

Hi,
Shift manual. It works 100% of the time.

The learning is a lifetime learning. You cannot teach it once and hope it will keep that pattern forever, if the driving style changes. It is an adaptive process. Use the throttle to accelerate and the program will soon adapt. It takes a while and it is ever changing. On average though, if you are the only driver, and you drive a certain way, the shift program will approach your style. I agree with the other poster, when it doesn't just shift with the tip buttons. It works.

Yes, just drive it in manual mode and it actually works pretty well. Put it in "D" and all bets are off. I just love it when it shifts into 5th at about 35 mph and the engine bogs when you give it a liitle gas. Press down a liitle more and it will drop to 4th and still have poor acceleration. Get mad and press too hard and it drops down to 2nd and takes off like a bat out of hell. It's not much good in city driving. This is not just one sample, my wife has been driving Porsche tips (4 cars) since 1996 and they all seem to do this. Imagine how bad it was when they only had 4 speeds. I would say (IMO) it is one of the most poorly programmed automatics in the world. Jumping between this automatic and the new ZF 6 speed in my BMW 335 is pure torture.

Now what's the deal about starting from a stop in 1st gear. I test drove a new on the lot '07 tip C2S and it started from 1st gear everytime in sport and non-sport, manual or automode, automatically selecting 1st gear when you came to a stop. However, we just purchased a '06 tip and it wants to start in 2nd all the time from a standing start.

Has this changed between model years? Or does mine need a reflash of some sort. I typically use manual mode but would like to have it auto shift to first gear when it comes to a complete stop as the 07 demo did, I also swear that it revmatched better on downshifts.

Any clues? Or is starting in 2nd normal?

That is sad to hear.
I would have thought the Tip would be a bit smoother and advanced like the ZF in my BMW 545i.

With so many rev matching fast shifting Slush boxes out now , why has Porsche lagged behind other manf. ?

The 6 speed manual is the best tranny I have ever tried, I thought about ordering a Tip , and I'm still on the fence, but posts like this are sad. I have yet to drive a Tip my dealer never has one to demo but I will make it a point to try it.

As rkeyser stated coming from a more advanced Auto the Tip is a let down .

Have a tip, it usually starts in 2nd unless I nail it or shift manually, it also shifts up through the gears
quickly and is in 5th by the time I am up to 50mph, seems like its programmed more for fuel economy than fun driving.

In my old C2 I made a point to redlining it through the gears if I could everytime I used it. After a year of doing that I was pretty happy with the shift points. This is simply hard transsmission to use.

Default Tip is great for mileage - I use manual when not cruising

I can cruise with Camrys on my Bay Area commute or rock and roll in the canyons in manual-

I like my Tip

Actually after 300 miles it is starting to work better. I seem to be a able to let off the gas at 4200rmp and it shifts without using the the Tip switch.

So what's changed then to make the '07 C2S w/tip I test drove start in 1st all the time by itself?

No idea. Lots of threads around here on the Tiptronic, and this is the first I've heard of any 997 Tiptronic defaulting to 1st gear.

MY 996 tip, will start in 1st only if the car registers that it is on an incline.
