This system is being pitched to us:

Although I never go for this sort of thing, I was wondering if anyone had it and had any opinions about it.

When I was finalizing the paperwork on mine the dealership representative mispoke about what a significant discount on my insurance policy I would receive by having something like a Lojack system. I called her on it and sure enough the discount is very small,--you wouldn't recoup the investment over many many years. As a result I passed on the 'deal.' We just don't have a problem in my area with cars being stolen.

If my car (or truck) were to get stolen the last thing I would want is to get it back! Have you ever seen or heard of a theft recovery coming back in the same shape it was in before it got stolen? Besides, that’s what I have insurance for.

1) The idea behind today's Lojack system's is so that the police can be informed within minutes of your car changing its location. Your car moves (gets towed, driven away) and you get 4-5 different messages within 10 minutes that your car is gone. Hence the car is recovered quickly.
2) The one time I had a car stolen and stripped, I got enough money from my insurance company to buy a Yugo.
3) Even if someone takes it for a short joy ride, it's a Porsche,....it'll take the abuse just fine.

Perhaps I'll consider Lojack at some point, but I think that for the most part the immanent danger to a car is outright vandalism, smash and grab, or bad drivers/parkers vs car theft. Not sure what I can do about those things except park carefully and hope for the best. I once caught hit and run because I heard my car alarm go off - I hope the 997 comes with a decent alarm built in

you cant say NFW to a robber, but when your consciously decide to hand the keys over to someone who might joyride it or f it up, thats different. NFW to valets!
