It's really not difficult to do at all, especially with OCBen's post as a guide. If you like doing things like this, it's totally ok. I did mine at 2500 miles just by backing the butt of the car over the incline in my driveway. No jacks, no ramps. A tight squeeze, but I was able to fit the oil collector and torque wrench in okie dokie.

There can't be any warranty issues if you keep your receipts for oil and filter. That's the law.

Dealer charges $325 for a change. That's legal robbery.

I enjoy nurturing my own car. Saving money is just a bonus. And doing it in my driveway saves a lot of time versus driving to the dealer and awaiting them to complete the job.

Regarding the possibility of stripping the engine drain plug threads: how in the world could you do this? You'd have to accidentally pull an incredible hulk on the wrench. That's just silly.

More likely to strip out the recessed hex part of the plug, if you get a bad angle on it, or somehow don't get the socket properly aligned and inserted and firmly seated.

$325!!!!!!! Where do you live? Do you here the sound of a latex glove popping when you have to pay that much? WOW!

Do you get these parts from the dealer (will they sell them to you or just frown and tell you they don't advise it) OR should I try online for the parts? Where? Suncoast?

Which oil do you guys use? Recommend. My 10k service was done last Aug but I've put about 4.5k on it to 5.5 and really think I need to change it before seasons change and driving becomes less.

Thanks for he search Ben...will maybe post pics and step by steps.

Later

$325...that's rediculous.
My dealer charges $140.

Oh yeah been...see that (sheepish grin). $325 or $140 it's still robbery for something which costs what $60-90 in supplies (filter, oil, washers, etc). We're talking what almost 100-200% markup if you believe the worst case scenario posted earlier of $325. No thanks I'll document and do it myself more than likely.

and as long as you use a torque wrench, you should have no problem with stripped plugs.
there is an excellent DIY on the site.
Do you have a website for Sunset? I tried googling them and did not locate them. Thanks.

The $325 is Rietzl Porsche in MA. I think Herb chambers quoted me $275 if I remember correctly. I paid Rietzl 525 to change oil, air filter, cabin filter, and do all the useless 20,000 mile checks on my V6 Cayenne. Complete ripoff. Never again.

In fairness, those price quotes were for the V6 cayenne. But the only difference is the extra 5 minutes it takes to remove and replace the plastic underbody panel on the Cayenne. So I don't know why the price would be materially different. But anything is possible.

The only redeeming factor in getting the dealer to change the oil is they turn off your service reminder on your dash. Otherwise that thing comes on every time you start your car forever...

Unless someone knows some magic way to shut that thing off at home. Anyone...?

There are two dealers: Sun Coast and Sunset. One's in FL and one's OR.

http://www.sunsetimports.com is the one in OR and they have very good prices. Guess you could just call each to find out which one has the better price on what you want.

I get my Mobil 1 for about $5.35 a quart and put in 8 quarts for an oil change. "It's so easy even a caveman can do it." This sort of thing is just gravy for dealerships. Stripping anything is extremely hard to do unless you are completely incompetent in a garage.

Hi,
These car hold 9 quarts. Suggest you lift the front end
a little to get more oil out. I change my oil on a slope driveway
so I can get the oil out. I do not even need a jack to
change the oil. This is the easiest car ever to change the oil.
I buy my parts from Sunset in Oregon.
Paul
