So after a year of going crazy with my rattles, researching all the rattle threads on this board, having the dealership take apart my console to replace a bunch of items (seatbelts, some wiring harness thingy, speakers, etc, etc) and still having to subject myself to some crazy annoying rattles that were seemingly coming from the dash, gauges, and center speaker/sports chrono clock, I have finally found where the annoying sound is coming from..... MY FREAKIN HANDBRAKE LEVER.
I'm not sure if its the button on the lever or the lever itself (I'll check that out later tonight or tomorrow), but the sound totally disappears when I gently hold my handbrake lever while driving, and I'm back in nirvana. To think I was thinking about selling the car (and buying another 997... ) because of this issue...
I guess I'll get the dealer to fix that when winter comes around again...
There is a mirror whistle problem. I researched it here and found out there is a known fix for this. They take apart the mirrors and seal up the seam so air doesn't pass through and whistle. When I first told my dealer about this they were in denial. Then I showed them the rennlist thread and they fixed it. Its been perfectly whistle free ever since.
Just got an 06 and have the whistling side mirror too! I'll have to check with my dealer and see about getting it fixed. Good to see its been addressed.
I had the handbreak rattle and my dealer dealt with it too. Somehow, for me, recognizing it was the handbrake was not an issue. The buzz was clearly coming from there.
I also have an intermittent rattle that sounds like it's coming from the storage compartment just behind the handbrake and it sounds like a small rubik's cube is bouncing around eratically in there. It's soft, and easily missed in the hum of the engine, but once you've heard it, you always notice it when it's there. My dealer thought it was from a crosswind causing a vibration in the underpanels, though they found nothing loose under there. It's better, but still sometimes present . . .
Ditto on the mirror whistle. When I test drove one of their cabriolets back in Fall 2005 it was the first thing I noticed. When I got my car it wasn't an issue. It's more often found in the 2005 cars and some early 2006 ones. By mid 2006 they figured it out. Some dealerships are still out in the woods...
