Actually, we were discussing p-cars at work and I had mentioned that an easy way to tell if someone's ever owned a Porsche before is to see where they go to put the key when they get in the car. There's been more than one occasion where someone went on and on telling me how they have had "x" porsche in the past and when they got in the car they not only immediately looked to start the car to the right of the steering wheel (in a LHD car) but then went on to ask where the ignition was. When I showed them it was to the left of the steering wheel they said that they must have moved it for the newer models. As far as I know it's always been on the left in the 911s. I was just wondering where it was on the RHD cars. Porsche's philosophy for race starts was one hand on the key to start the car, one hand on the stick. I assumed this would follow through to the RHD car, pushing the ignition to the right of the wheel but wanted to be sure.

For the 911s it's always been on the side opposite the gear shift lever. I believe on my 914 it was on the right,--and I think it was on the right also on the 924, 944, and on the 928 (up on the dash quadrant). Only the 911 holds to the 356 and 550 tradition. Perhaps your friend had another Porsche,--other than a 911.
when i was in england i stopped at a porsche dealership. This is the only picture i have but its just to the left of the headlight control, hidden behind the right spoke of the wheel.

Boxsters probably have it to so as to keep the parts lists from being too long! Cayennes? Why they would be on the left is beyond me but they are,--any Le Mans entries by Cayennes?
