Default 100,000 997s out there...

Yes folks. The 997 is proving to be a best seller. Porsche announced that they have already reached their 100,000th 997 since production began in April 2004.

That's great, I guess. For the cost conscious the best move is to let someone else take the hit or possibly buy a limited production one. My guess is it will be much tougher in future to hit this feat again.

the downside to this sales success - it slows technical improvements from making their way into the car, like direct injection and the DSG. why change things if sales are strong?

Yes, but I wonder how these are distributed worldwide. Just because it made 100,000 does not mean we see more it here in the US. How can we find this out?

I think Porsche keeps most production and distribution numbers pretty close to its vest. Source being an automotive journalist friend of mine. Not sure if that remains true today.

Those #s are all on the Porsche AG website and in the annual report... not regionalized, but in aggregate... I don't think that they're all in SoCal, but there's likely a mess of 'em there.

That just means that 99,999 other folks are having as much fun as I am. Rock on! <g>

So thats around 700million give or take if the avg 997 is 90k and 70k goes back to Porsche? Wonder how much of that is profit.

Overall I think it's good news, hope Porsche does good and invests in research/development, that's what they're best at.

I had read here that future production was being decreased. A few days later my salesman told me the same thing without being asked. By the way he is not your typical salesman. Could it be that production hit a record and is now being pulled back? I don't care either way. So what if everyone has a Porsche. With all the other Porsche models out there, the average person can't tell the difference between a Carrera, Boxster, or Cayman. For example, my aunt likes my 997 because it's "bigger" than her neighbours Porsche-a 987.
