Default California cars

Do cars from california have slightly different specs then cars from other states? In this I mean, do they produce less power due to the emissions and stricter rules about pollution?

I only ask because i've heard or read something about this but for the life of me can't remember the exacts.

Oh, and a few years back a guy from cali bought my car and made sure it was not a california car. I asked why and he said they have less power. I guess that stuck with me since.

thanks in advance

AFAIK, that's not the case any more. Used to be "49 state cars" and CA cars. Of course we may get a bit less performance because most of the premium gas here is 91 octane as opposed to 93 or 94 octane available in other states. And for that 91 octane, we get to pay more too!

Do you get oxygenated fuels there? Twenty miles up from me they sell diluted gas; so the mouth breathers toward D.C./Balto don't drop any lower on the Wechsler-Bellevue scale.

There is one emissions packagage for the USA. As noted above, the gas is 91 octane so we lose some horepower as a result of the lower rating.

LOL. The mouth breathers. Don't know the exact mixtures here, but rest assured it's "different". Used to have MTBEs (believe that's the correct abbreviation) then it was decided that brought on more ills than cures?

So, we just get the "Premium Lite" here, that we probably pay .30 (min) or more per gallon then you do on the right coast. Up in "Edgy Land" .20 or .30 more than in Ventura. I always make sure that I gas up before I head there! Of course it's 73 degrees here today on the coast with relatively low humidity, so I suppose it evens out due to not having to have AC.

CA cars have a specific country code in the ECU (C03) &C02 is for the rest of the US.

may be a silly question but does the ECU code effect the car's performance at all??

We are probably down 5-8rwhp due to the quality of the gasoline here in Ca. I do blend in 3.0 gallons of 104 racing unleaded in the car. It gets the octane to around 93.5 plus the better burn qualities of the race gas.

Too lazy to search right now, but here or perhaps on another forum, someone posted a "matrix" of how much of each grade to blend to give the equivilant of a higher grade. Are you adding 3.0 gallons to 10 or so gallons to give you that 93.5 octane?

3 gallons to 13 gallons...it is logrythmic. If you get an extra 39 octane points divide that into the 16 gallons and you will get close to 93.5 octane. The matrix I saw was for 100 octane. 5 gallons of 100 to 5 gallons of 91 gets you 95.5.

Here is a chart for 100 octane..keep in mind I am blending 104 Sunoco with 91.

VP Racing fuel chart 100 octane

Here's another chart..
